New carpet before or after fitting IKEA Pax wardrobes?

Another question re IKEA PAX wardrobes! We are redoing the bedroom including new carpet, the extra tall Pax wardrobes will be going along the entire length of one wall with an approx 4cm gap which I’m going to get filled in so they look fitted. We will be buying new carpet - is it ok to get this after the wardrobes have been fitted and stand the wardrobes on floorboards? I’m wondering if with underlay and a thickish carpet, will there be a problem with the doors opening or is the plinth of the wardrobe deep enough to accommodate this? I was thinking that I would rather have them fitted first and then we can decorate/carpet around them without worrying about wallpaper/paint being damaged when the wardrobes are fitted. Thanks

I wouldn't fit a carpet round furniture. It gives no room for change.

When getting ‘proper’ built in wardrobes then the advice were given was to fit the carpet after.

(We didn’t get the wardrobes by the way after being quoted nearly £4K!!).

I would definitely fit the carpet first, especially if there will be a gap down the side of the wardrobe which wil be almost impossible to "fill in" with carpet with the wardrobe in place.

There is only one wall suitable for the wardrobes so I can’t see us ever changing the layout.

I meant the furniture more so than the layout.

Before before before!

We are about to dismantle the PAX set up that the previous owners left and we have to recarpet as they didn't do it before.

As an aside, we are getting rid of it becuase I hate it, there is so much wasted space in it.

Wallywobbles · 08/06/2020 11:47

Definitely before. Never after. Much much much harder to do after and the carpet should outlast the wardrobes. We have several of the mirrored pax wardrobes and while they are solid they won't last eternally.

absolutely put the carpet down first.

I’m having wardrobes fitted, by a very large well known company, and they said it is better to do it on floorboards, because the carpet pile drops with the weight of the wardrobes and can leave a gap at the top after a period of time.

In addition it’s easier to change the carpet. You’re not trying to match any heights up.

So yes. Go with fitting the wardrobes onto the floor boards.

Sorry and they you fit the carpet up to the wardrobe.
