Hate new kitchen

Remmy123 · 28/05/2020 19:20

I hate my new kitchen, I'm so upset with myself.

The colour just looks awful in the new extension. It's not a paintable kitchen.

It's the main hub of the home it just depresses me when I am in there.

Wouid I be mad to replace all of the doors, end panels etc? The company I got it from have a vast range of doors the same size so it would be simple. It's not bespoke. Love my worktop etc.

I wasn't in right frame of mind when I chose it and I chose bad.

I don't have the money to do it so I'd have to put it on finance/ save

But if he happy / I even hate cooking in it 😢

Wtf. There are people having lost their homes families and incomes right now. You chose the fxxcking kitchen in the first place. Show some gratitude and get a grip.

Urgh, you're nasty. People are allowed not to like what they have chooses just because there is a pandemic doesn't mean we should shut our mouths. Get a grip.

Hi @Remmy123 Have a look at the kitchen in this rightmove link. The colours are very similar to yours and they have used the pendant lights you suggested upthread above the island. Might help you see if it would make enough difference for you?

Another option may be to change out the doors for a darker colour on the bottom units and keep the top ones light grey? Would help anchor the kitchen and add contrast. There's loads on pinterest. The obvious colour combination would be a dark grey (like the island in the link), but I've also seen photos were it looks good with a dark blue or grey-teal if you think you need to inject colour?

Remmy123 · 29/05/2020 11:39

Thanks again - first thing I'm going to do is change the pendants as suggested.

I'll look at how much to change island colour.

Prob doesn't help that I have been working from home al these weeks on the kitchen island staring at the cabinets 😂

I love the kitchen op. Just add colour with accessories. That colour will take any shade you choose.

NotMeNoNo · 29/05/2020 19:07

Honestly get some colour in there. Grey goes really well with strong colours. Even if you raid the house for blankets etc to mock it up. I really like these graphic prints for example:

Good advice here, keep the doors, bring in colour on walls and accessories. I painted a mug tree and kitchen roll holder in dark turquoise, and bought tea towels, jugs, mugs, etc in turquoise and fuschia. Easy to change too when I get fed up. Currently eyeing up a wall and wondering if I can paint it fuschia before husband notices and stops me.

Colour is your answer op. Personally I'd choose a mix of pastel shades but the brights in those pics look great. How about coral? Also, what have you got at the window? You could really go to town on a patterned blind in the shade you choose...

Bluesheep8 · 30/05/2020 08:14

And what colour are your walls and tiles now?

Remmy123 · 30/05/2020 09:46

I have Calcutta grey beautiful work too thst extends up to the wal units - I won't change that as it's lovely

Walls are timeless by dulux - wooden floor

@Remmy123 it does all sound lovely but very neutral. Probably what I would choose too as I like safe neutral colours. A few pops of colour would make a big difference or paint one wall a dark/bright colour. Sounds like you need some points of interest to bring it together.

Hi, how are you feeling about your kitchen now? I can relate as I have just done the same thing....about to get my new kitchen installed and changed my mind about the colour at the last minute as was overthinking. Have painted the room and I don't like the colour....doesn't look warm enough. I haven't been sleeping properly and am very stressed and getting anxious and depressed about it which is unlike me.

Remmy123 · 10/08/2022 11:03

I actually like it as it's now lived in, have accessorise etc I prob wouid have gone for different if I couid go back but I dont hate it!

i think it's a really big expensive thing to do and we dont want to get it wrong - I was being over critical. My kitchen gets complimented all the time.

im sure it will be fine!

The kitchen hasn't been installed but I can't change the colour as is all painted. It is natural white doors with aterra bianca benchtop. I don't like the grey in the natural white...some lights it looks good but other lights nothing special. My husband thinks the room looks good but to me doesn't have enough warmth in it. I had picked the colour I liked (white cloak quarter) and then overthought it and changed my mind at the last minute as was getting stressed from thinking about it. It has all made me feel very anxious and now a bit depressed. Is a hard feeling to shake and my husband is good but says it is not worth getting upset about a slight colour difference.

Your husband is right. You can simply paint and re-paint the walls until you get what you're looking for, also wait until the units are in before you pass judgement, as that will totally change the feel of the room. Then live with it for a bit, as that makes a difference too - what you thought you wanted, you often find you no longer do, and vice versa.

mememe67 · 11/08/2022 03:55

Thankyou I just wish I could get rid of this anxious feeling. Rationally I know I don't know exactly what it will look like and making myself feel sick and worrying about it isn't helping anyone and just making me miserable. Is hard to stop overthinking though which got me into this mess in the beginning!

FinallyHere · 11/08/2022 05:36

@mememe67 hope you can resolve those anxious feelings soon.

What kind of lighting do you have ? Even white lights come in a range from warm to cool. Would trying some warmer bulbs or strips make any difference to the look of your kitchen at least at night?

mememe67 · 11/08/2022 05:44

We have warm lighting. The room gets a lot of sunlight during the day which is why I think it is getting the grey look at times from the Natural White paint colour.
