What is a reasonable length when buying a flat?

I dont want to get one that is too short.

I would not get one with less then 100 years. Mortgages don't like leases shorter the 80 years so the closer you get to that the less people will be interested in buying it because they themselves will have a hard time selling it.

Also when buying a flat I would look for a leasehold with share of freehold.

Also look carefully at the terms of the ground rent. What are the terms of increase? Is management run by the leaseholders, or do they have any say?

85 is still comfortable if you are ok with going through the lease extension process. For this it is best not to have an absentee freeholder.
