What to do with lounge floor

So we moved into our new home a few months ago. I pulled up the hideous lounge carpet and found floorboards underneath in pretty good nick. They really need revarnishing though but I'm totally clueless about these things. Do I need to sand it first or can I just varnish over? Do I varnish or wax? I've got a dog who is already finding the floorboards quite slippy so would wax be better or worse for him for grip. Also I have a 3 month old baby, so is it feasible to do this job now or should I put off until he's a bit older?

Sorry don't know why this came up in pregnancy, it should have gone to Peopeeties/DIY. How do I move this?

Fixed that for you now!

Original floorboards? Best thing to do is to sand back to wood - then you can stain/varnish to get the finish you want. This is no mean feat - you can pay someone to do it, or we hired the machines and did ours (approx 2 days per room) for about £200 in all. Well worth it though!

It’s not a difficult job, I’ve done 3 floors myself, but it’s noisy dusty and a bit of a faff to hammer all the nails in before you start sanding.

If you can afford it get someone in to do it. It probably is worth it by the time you’ve hired the machine, bought the sandpaper etc.

Our floors looked fab. Bit draughty though which I hadn’t fully thought through.

Thanks for the advice. I think it may be too much hassle right now. Think I'm going to cover with laminate fake wood boards instead. Easy to fit and mess free.
