Should we start building work now??

We were due to start an extension in March. A year in the planning what with planning permission, architects plans, party wall agreements etc. But obviously we had to stop as soon as the lockdown was announced on 23 March.

Now construction workers are being told to go back to work and our builders want to start the work. We can socially distance from them fairly easily as there is side access to the garden and an outside loo we don't need to use. We can just put a barrier up inside the house and keep away from it.

But I'm conflicted as to whether this is really ok. It'll mean extra noise for neighbours, who are all obviously mostly at home. (We're in a semi detached suburban street) and the guys themselves, with the best will in the world, won't really be able to socially distance that well when working.

But pulling out will obviously have financial implications for the builders.

What would you do??

I would go ahead. Life has to restart. Talk to the builders about payments though. You don’t want them going bankrupt. By not employing them, they could all be out of work. Your neighbours were expecting the work so let them know and the builder has to ensure safe working. His employees are his responsibility.

Get on with it before your builders find another project. Keep the neighbours informed but it's going to happen at some point anyway.
