I’m looking to move into my own property soon I’m a sing parent to my ds, everyone says that council tax is a fortune how much do you think I will need to pay a month?

You'll get a single person discount- think that's 25% off the bill

dementedpixie · 08/05/2020 18:26

Also depends where you live and the value of the property

Look up what the band is in that area and it will tell you what it will be. Then minus any deductions like pp mentioned or check if you will eligible for council tax support.

MsChatterbox · 08/05/2020 18:30

But FYI mine is about £130 a month (2 bed house)

You will get the 25% discount a a single person as pp said. If you find the postcode of the property you are moving into, go into your government website and it will give you the band of the property and the yearly cost. Devide that by 10 or 12 (most councils you can chose to pay over 10 or 12 months)

The website for your local council should set out the council tax bands for the area (A being the lowest and H being the highest). You may also qualify for up to a 25% discount as there is only one adult living in the property (presuming your child is under 18).

When looking at properties you can then find out the council tax band by looking the property here www.gov.uk/council-tax-bands.

Posted too soon!

From there there you can work out how much your council tax would be a month (councils usually let you pay the total (minus any discount) in one go, in 10 instalments (giving you two council tax free months) or in 12 instalments.

Our bog-standard 3 bed semi is £160/month, but we have no single persons discount and are Band C. The bands and amount vary a lot between areas, definitely something to consider when choosing a property.

Fettfrett · 08/05/2020 18:44

Our 3 bed semi is a band D and is £209 per month for 10 months of the year (don't pay in Feb and March)

Depends on a lot of factors - my 3 bed semi detached private let with a huge garden & drive in a nice area was a band D & was £140 a month with no discounts

My current HA 2 bed flat with no garden or outside space in a not that great area is a band C & is £96 a month with the 25% discount

My nieces 4 bed council property with a huge garden & drive in a shitty area is a band B & around £110 a month with no discounts.

All of these properties are within the same council.
