How do you paint outdoor wooden furniture?

Given the lockdown, I thought I would paint some old wooden chairs and a table. I have never done anything this like but we had some primer and paint left over from a decorator who had painted our living room recently.

I sanded, and primed and then painted the chairs/table. Then it rained today and they look ruined. I assume it was the wrong sort of paint but I am gutted.

What sort of paint are you meant to use (and can you get it somehow during the lockdown)? Also, what do I have to do to repair my mistake?

External paint, stain or varnish for whatever it is you are painting. They do external paints for wood, metal & masonry.

The recent guidance list from the police would suggest that going to a store to buy brushes and paint, i.e non essential repairs, is not likely to be viewed as reasonable excuse to leave the house so you would have to order it to be delivered. I imagine you would have to sand all the interior paint off first though.
