Painting a wooden floor

Hello... being stuck in the house is making me hate everything about my sitting room floor. It is wooden and it has a delightful orange varnish on it (think 80's pine). I loathe it but can't afford a carpet. Has anyone successfully painted their floor? I'm thinking slate grey...

Is it wooden or laminate?

Wooden floor boards that have been sanded and varnished. They aren't in bad condition but the colour is ghastly

If you paint, you're likely to need many coats and it will inevitably chip and mark.

Personally given you'll have to sand down regardless, I'd find a varnish colour you like as it's more forgiving.

Thank you!

I quite like the look of painted black or white floorboards

We sanded then painted our horrible floorboards with regular trade emulsion that we had colour matched, then finished with a high wear varnish of the kind used by theatres and exhibition spaces. It’s lasting really well against kids & dogs.

We sanded and then whitewashed ours (using Dulux trade ultramatt emulsion mixed 1part paint to I think 5 parts water) did 1 coat cause we wanted the colour kind of coming through , then finished with bona super Matt floor varnish (cost £80 for 5 litres but covered our 4m x 5m bedroom and still have some left over :) i was super happy with the look and it’s really nice and smooth to walk on , I’ll try find a photo

Here’s some photos! All the floorboards were a bit different (some were a lot older than the ones in first photo ) but it turned out fine! Now got some rugs down too so more cosy 😆

Another vote from me for sanding down and finishing in a better colour. Fully painted floors always always always scratch and chip and look terrible.

Make sure you end up at the door!

Thanks all- I've sanded and varnished floors before but I suppose I was looking for a quick fix with one as I don't have the space to move everything out, or the ability to hire a sander.

Buy a large rug then?

I think you will need to sand as it is varnished.

We sanded a couple times, then added primer, and then painted with gloss paint. It was a "one coat" paint but we needed 2 and it looks great. We did grey as the walls are Middleton Pink and we thought white might make it look like a little girl's room. The paint didn't go as far as wall paint so that's something to keep in mind.
