Fence turning green! (Pic)

Two years ago we spent months painting all the fences grey and I hoped we’d get 4 or 5 years before we’d have to do it again. However, many of the areas that get little direct sunlight have turned green and mossy. So since we’ve got nothing else to do on a weekend we’re going to tackle it but can I stop this happening again? Also, do I need to treat the green, damper areas before I paint them?

It might be moisture rising up from the wall? We had that paint if it's the Cuprinol one? And we just used to give it a quick clean once a year!

Yes it’s Cuprinol Ducksback. I haven’t actually tried to clean it so it may scrub off. It’s in other areas where there’s no wall but that could be moisture rising from the soil / grass.

Splash from rain gets soil and stuff on the lower bits of the fence and stuff starts to grow. Clean, possibly repaint, repeat in a few years.

Happened as we,, with ours using Ducksback. If there are a few coats in it we found jetwashing it off worked well but you do need to use something to kill the green algae. Assume there is a chemical wash you can use like you can inside. Perhaps a weak bleach water mix?

You need to spray with something like Wet and Forget or Spray and Leave, you can also use them on green decking and paving slabs to stop them being slippery.

Thanks @elf666 I’ll take a look. The problem will now be getting hold of it....

Everything in my garden goes bright green because it's shady. I used to paint the fence every year and each spring it would be green again. Sprayed it with Patio Magic using a large plant sprayer, that was three years ago and its still the brown I painted it. It takes a couple of weeks for the green to die once sprayed.

Amazon have it, qvc or ideal world tv online?

Wet and Forget is great stuff.
