Hi all. We were a few days off finishing our loft conversion when work stopped.. which has given me some more time to get the colours right.

I was just going to go bright white (I like it), but my knowledgeable friend said that would be cold.

Hall - needs painting all over. north facing, quite dark. Carpet will be replaced. I like one called Ulster with a subtle pin stripe. Link below. Had picked out a grey stripe..but what warm colour will match? Ummm

Loft room is sunny and bright. But low ceilings. We had picked out a silver grey soft carpet. I think this room will be easier than the hall.

Carpet link. More grey than brown in real life

I think the carpet is fairly neutral so you can go with whatever you like on the walls. Looks like you have some lovely period features in your hall. I'd go for a warm grey or warm beige - something that is relatively easy to live with and won't date because that's a big space to re-paint. I like Craig & Rose paint, particularly the 1829 Vintage colours.

Thanks @Africa2go, yes it's big and expensive and I've made wrong choices in the past! I think it's a warm grey or beige, I just don't know how you tell if warm. Is there a trick to it?

I think the paint descriptions usually are helpful. Anything that says a creamy shade of or a warm shade of etc. Avoid anything that refers to blue in it as I think (stand to be corrected!) that makes it fees cold. I'd get a few testers.

Our hallway is virtually identical to yours in terms of layout and light. We opted to paint ours Little Greene Clockface. It's described as a light grey but it's more like a very pale green/ cream/ grey depending on the light.

Elephants Breath by Farrow and Ball is a classic warm grey. Looks very classy with white woodwork. We have used Pointing with our oak staircase. Look at the F&B Neutral groups for inspiration. I think your carpet choice is excellent by the way! You will definitely find something that coordinates with it in the groups I’ve mentioned. Some groups are warm and others are colder.

Our hallway is light green and I love it. Of you want to go down the grey route I can recommend dulux polished pebble. I speak from bitter experience that grey is so easy to get wrong but this is beautiful. (Get a tester though as in the shop I didn't even think it looked grey)

Thanks everyone. Struggling to buy testers, but have managed to get from farrow and ball. Decorator wants to use johnstone's washable matt, and they colour match.
