Dishwashers with cutlery trays

crazydiamond222 · 09/03/2020 12:09

Does anyone have one of these instead of the basket ones. If so do you think it works better or does it mean you can't fit much on the top shelf.

Also is the cutlery tray removable/how do you feel it would work if your cutlery drawer is not near the dishwasher?

My husband is keen on one of these but I am not sure for the reasons above.

I’m in the process of looking at new dishwashers and my one criteria is a cutlery tray as my current basket has holes in 3 sections so I can only use them for wide items now IYSWIM . The ones I’ve looked at have all had plenty of clearance on the top shelf although so far I’ve only looked in John Lewis

sunshinesupermum · 09/03/2020 12:14

Miele is the make with a cutlery tray at the top of the dishwasher. I wouldn't be without it. I think there is more room overall because the cutlery doesn't take up as much space. I also think there is more room for cutlery by laying it out on the tray.

Hoppinggreen · 09/03/2020 12:14

We’ve got one and I do like it BUT if the spoons aren’t face down they don’t clean!

sunshinesupermum · 09/03/2020 12:16

PS yes the tray is removable, but why would you want/need to? There is ample 'head room' between the tray and the shelf for crockery/glasses.

Seeline · 09/03/2020 12:16

Ours had a tray. Didn't really want to change from the basket to start with, but I actually prefer it now. Doesn't really hinder the use of the top tray, and you can get more in the bottom without the basket. I also think it gets the cutlery cleaner.

Our dishwasher is in the utility so miles from the cutlery drawer. I can hold most of the cutlery in one hand, so normally only involves two trips. we tend to put like items in the same areas so all the spoons together etc, so relatively simple to put into the cutlery drawer as held together.

sunshinesupermum · 09/03/2020 12:17

Hoppinggreen my spoons lay on their side and always come out clean.

Seeline · 09/03/2020 12:17

Oh and ours is a Bosch.

RolandOnTheRopes · 09/03/2020 12:20

We have a Bosch with a cutlery tray, I hate cutlery baskets. No issues with spoons. If you put the same types of cutlery all together in a group when loading it, you just grab them as a handful to put them away.

binkybea · 09/03/2020 12:21

I have a Bosch with cutlery tray rather than basket.

It is very useful imo and gives you more space inside dishwasher for plates etc.

Works well Wink

TheVanguardSix · 09/03/2020 12:22

I do! A Bosch one. I love it. I think it fits loads more and cutlery comes out cleaner than before. I like that I can whack in all sorts of carving knives, spatulas, cooking spoons/utensils as well as the standard cutlery. It is removable, yes.
It can be a bit of a faff because some of my glasses sitting beneath the tray are tall, so I have to adjust them to fit properly, but it all works out. Overall, I love the machine we bought and I do prefer the cutlery tray to a basket. Oh and my cutlery drawer isn’t next to the machine. It’s just never been a problem. Even when I had a basket, I’d just grab the cutlery itself and take it to the cutlery drawer rather than remove the basket.

crazydiamond222 · 09/03/2020 12:22

Thanks for all the feedback. I was asking if it is removable so it could be carried over to the cutlery drawer.

It however sounds like people instead sort the cutlery when you put it in and then carry a handful of forks etc to the drawer. Is this correct?

We have a Miele one with top drawer I much prefer it to our old one which didn’t.

crazydiamond222 · 09/03/2020 12:25

Those of you that have a bosch one do you know the model number? The miele ones look a bit pricey.

Part of me misses the cutlery basket; the one with the drawer has a bigger capacity, which I know is the point but means I can’t put it round so often!

fairislecable · 09/03/2020 12:28

I love my Miele dishwasher the cutlery tray is fantastic, it can be lifted out to take to the drawer but as mine is nearby I don’t need to.

Ktay · 09/03/2020 12:28

PS if you’re near Abingdon in Oxfordshire, the Miele factory shop does good deals, we got ours half price. There’s a stock list on their website. That said, it doesn’t seem any better than our old Bosch.

schnubbins · 09/03/2020 12:29

I have a boss tray one for the last few years .When the dishwasher is loaded properly and cutlery facing sideways then they come out clean .Not too sure if its better or not.I kept the baskets from my old dishwasher and so have both now.My cutlery drawer is beside the dishwasher so no carrying to and fro.

Humina · 09/03/2020 12:29

We had this before we moved and I loved it. Yes, I'd sort and then put away in the drawer. Much preferred it to the basket.

CatyaPurella · 09/03/2020 12:31

My Samsung dishwasher has a tray and prefer it to the basket. Agree on facing spoons down though!

Herocomplex · 09/03/2020 12:31

The good thing about the Miele design is that all the trays are adjustable to allow for bigger items. I love my Miele. Good advice about the factory!

Normandy144 · 09/03/2020 12:33

I have a bosch one and it is great. As others do i wrack the cutlery in groups so when I'm putting it away i just grab a handful of spoons and it's done in one go. I don't think the cutlery tray is removable but my dishwasher is close to the cutlery drawer so it's not an issue. I like the tray because it means there's more space on the bottom drawer.

Bimbleberries · 09/03/2020 12:34

I really like it for ease of unloading - all the things together, just carry a handful over to the drawer.

I dislike it for the lack of space in the top shelf - not that it makes a huge difference for most cups etc, but the one thing I can't fit in now is wine glasses, so they have to go on the bottom shelf, which I assume is not as good for them. So far none have broken, though, so maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily.

The top shelf does go down a bit at the sides, but still not enough to fit wine glasses in. I don't think mine are particularly long stemmed, but maybe they are, as other people never seem to find this a problem.

Over all though, the ease of unloading swings it for me, as I have cutlery in every time, and wine glasses only occasionally!

My is Miele, the cheapest there was. It's good generally, although the dividers etc always seem to be in the wrong place for me to fit what I want in it nicely, but it always works out OK.

xyzandabc · 09/03/2020 12:36

We inherited a dishwasher with cutlery tray when we moved house. Previously had a basket. 2 years later and I still have the tray, would go back to a basket any day.

The tray does make unloading a 2 second job as we sort the cutlery when we put it in, so forks together, knifes together etc.

However loading it, I much prefer just chucking everything in the basket. With the tray, not only do you have to sort it and put the right implement in the right place (well I guess you don't have to but otherwise you don't get the only benefit it has which is the unloading efficiency) but you have to pull the tray out and in for every single item.

Big faff, I don't like it. Thought I would get used to it but nope, I'd love a basket back.

bilbodog · 09/03/2020 12:39

I recommend miele as well - just get the cheapest.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 12:42

I have a Miele with a tray. I don't find loading it any more of a faff than a basket which surprised me. Unloading it is a breeze.

However, a good number of the little prongs have snapped.
