South coast bolt hole

I have come into a bit of money, it's inheritance. I'd like to buy a bolt hole on the south coast, within walking distance to the beach. I'll be travelling by train from London and no more than one change, preferably none. Budget up to £400,00.
Anyone have a nice little seaside bolt hole area they can recommend? I've been looking at Brighton, Bournemouth, New Milton so far

I noticed that someone had recommended Sandbanks upthread. I had a quick look at prices and, as I thought, about one flat at £400,000.

However I was amazed to see our old flat on the market! The current owner obviously has no taste! It looks awful! It is about 100 yds from the beach though! Not within your price bracket though. I would seriously consider Bournemouth. You need a car in some seaside resorts. I would also look at Broadstairs. Swanage and Lyme Regis are great but again I think you need a car or you miss out on other delights!

What can people tell me about Ryde, I've a change of plan and there's the option to move permanently
