How do you clear this shower trap?

Hope the picture attaches, does anyone know how to remove and clear this shower trap?

I've had a plumber clear it before so I think it should be possible.

I have one of these that sits in the plug and you just pull it out and all the hair is attached

I have a recently installed shower that has that trap and I was wondering too. I wondered should it somehow unscrew but it won’t budge.
Excellent device @whatsmynextmove

Cakecrumbs · 07/03/2020 08:57

The centre bit pulls out, don't try and move the side bits, they won't budge. So if you put your hand into the hole and feel for an edge then pull it the centre should pull out and it is like a little cup

ALadyofLetters · 07/03/2020 08:59

The middle bit comes out. It’s very similar to the ones on dishwashers.

BruceAndNosh · 07/03/2020 10:00

Are you me OP?
I have the identical one and have just come back from holiday and it stinks!
I have improved matters with foaming drain cleaner but it needs more.

Please let me know if you have any success

PictPost · 07/03/2020 11:26

Pulling it out from the middle doesn't work. That piece you see is all one unit but I can feel the lip under the water. Just not budging at all.

Sooooo annoying

I've used Mr muscle foamer, half a bottle at a time. Three doses and it's fine

PictPost · 07/03/2020 11:48

bruceandnash I feel your pain! We tried one stop before but didn't really do much so had plumber our who sorted it and cleared it all. I want there though so couldn't ask how he managed to get it all out.

Buster bathroom unblocked is great. It dissolves hair. Highly recommend it

Grumpyunleashed · 07/03/2020 12:48

I have a trap just like this one that was fitted a year ago. It simply lifts out for cleaning.
It can be fiddly to get a grip on it. When it’s DW turn to do she puts a bradel into one of the little holes on the top for a bit of leverage and lifts it out.
When clean we pop it back and always refill it with water. Basically it’s the trap like a U or S bend and needs water in it to keep out the smells from drains however many chemicals you pour down.

BruceAndNosh · 07/03/2020 19:21

@Grumpyunleashed can you post a pic with the middle bit removed please?

StillSurviving · 07/03/2020 19:28

Aw, please don't just pour chemicals into the environment....

Grumpyunleashed · 07/03/2020 22:31

@BruceAndNosh - it seems my one is not as identical as I thought. Here are some poor pictures to try and show it’s parts.

Looking at the original photo again do you think it could require a small turn to unlock it so it lifts out?

@Grumpyunleashed that's really helpful thank you.
I'm going to contact bathroom fitter who iinstalled the shower last year and check if mine dismantles like yours

Rhapsodyinpurple · 08/03/2020 09:25

We have a different one but we have a piece to lift off, then the bit inside needs to be twisted and then pulled out. It also has seals which need replacing from time to time.

PictPost · 09/03/2020 08:44

bruceandnash would you mind letting me know what your plumber says?

Who knew a shower trap could be such a mystery

Nosh
I will get your name right!

OMG!!!! I have this trap (for the last 5 years) and I never realised the inside bit came out - until I read this thread. 🤮🤮🤮. It was disgustingly satisfying - thank you thank you thank you.

BruceAndNosh · 09/03/2020 10:36

@Grumpyunleashed Yours is ever so slightly different as mine and OP as yours has little notches around the outer edge of inner ring

If you get yourself one of these, it should do the job brilliantly. Many cheap versions available, but just make sure you read the instructions properly

WooMaWang · 09/03/2020 11:09

We used to have one of them. Pulling the middle out doesn't help much.

I found using drain cleaner worked best to clear it. I could never find a way to just clear it properly as part of normal shower cleaning.

BruceAndNosh · 09/03/2020 16:42

Well I rang the manufacturers (it has JT written on the silver cover bit ...Just Trays)and very helpful woman on phone told me to hold the outer ring down with one hand, and hoick out the middle . She said it is meant to be really tight.

It was minging.

It is now pristine.

PictPost · 09/03/2020 17:04

So exciting BruceAndNosh.

I don't think mine is in two pieces but will give it a go. Want to be reporting back a pristine shower trap too.
