Can anyone rec a simple smart thermostat for oil boiler please?

As per title, our old timer broke so can currently only manually do on & off for heating.

We have oil heating & would just like a timer that you can turn on from phone as well as set standard timer.

I don't need all the geofencing learning when you're home & away malarkey, would just like to make sure if the internet goes down that we can manually override to have heating on.

I think any thermostat will work, it doesn't matter whether its oil boiler or gas, the timer/thermostat just sends on or off signal.

I have Hive with my oil boiler which would do what you want, but I'm sure there are other and/or cheaper options.

I always recommend Drayton wiser as you can set it up to work as a zoned system. What that means is that you can set each room individually to go on and off. Obviously that is dependent on having thermostatic rad valves.
Otherwise, Honeywell T6 is an easy one too.

Thanks so much. I'd read old threads recommending honeywell as a brand & though we don't have smart valves they would be useful to put them in a couple of rooms that I use for childminding. Will have a look at the drayton. Much appreciated!

You can get various types for different types of heating systems . Ali express have a they range from £20 - £40 with wifi connection and remote switch on and off from mobile

Ali express have a range of none compliant insurance invalidating pieces of shit. Drayton Wiser or Honeywell Lyric T6R would be my suggestion fitted loads never had any come backs or issues even with older clients who dont normally get on with modern stats.

Yeah, don't cheap out on this stuff - a colleague had his oil heater jammed on full for two days, used £300 of oil.

I'm using a Hive thermostat and it's perfectly decent. It's not "smart" as such, just allows you to set as complex a seven-day schedule as you like via a web page or the app, and then twiddle it from your phone if you want to, or you can use the wall thermostat in a more normal way. Does boost and 'frost prevention' minimum temps too.

Was just getting a decision between hive & Honeywell & reading there needs to be a receiver on the boiler-why?

I thought it was just a gadget that turned the thermostat on & off. Our oil boiler is an outdoor model. Can we still use it?

Never fitted a Hive thermostat, but you shouldn't need to fit anything to your boiler that isn't already there if you have a thermostat currently on your system. All you will need to do is replace your current thermostat with a receiver box, which should be "hardwired" to a wiring centre for all your heating electrics. Unfortunately, it is never quite as simple as turning on and off, it needs to tell the boiler that there is a demand, which then tells your zone valves to open, which tells your pump to run, which then tells the boiler to fire. If one of these is interrupted, it will cause an issue. It is something you can do yourself if you already have a thermostat fitted. If not, I would get a heating engineer or electrician in to wire it for you, as you will need to know the difference between all the different wiring plans.
