I am wondering whether/how stamp duty may be reformed in the forthcoming budget if anyone has thoughts on this please.
Also the situation of having a second uk resident home for a short time. Thank you in advance for any comments.

Hah I’m now hoping there isn’t a SDLT because we just exchanged with a huge tax bill due to it being a second property. Nothing seems to have been leaked about reforms to SDLT although there were murmurings before the last election.

Hoping there isn’t a SDLT reform I mean

We will likely complete in April so I am hoping for a change!

littlecontis · 26/02/2020 23:47

Hoping for a change too as it's unlikely we will complete in the next couple of weeks!

I don't recall seeing Land Tax mentioned in the Con manifesto.

In fact, they got their media buddies to rubbish it with made-up lies, so only a government that was stupid or deceitful would introduce something they'd been attacking as unworkable.

Ah.

I see the problem.

Thank you for replies. Am keeping fingers crossed for being better off as waiting to exchange.

Boris was on about changing stamp duty but @PigletJohn is right that it was dropped from the manifesto. I still have my fingers crossed.

are you a person who is not tax-resident in the UK?

(for example, are you the proprietor of the Daily Mail?)

PigletJohn · 27/02/2020 23:43

(the 2019 Conservative Manifesto said:

"We will help pay for this by bringing
in a stamp duty surcharge on non-UK
resident buyers.")

When I was splitting from XH, I bought a house to move out to, it was classed as a 2nd home for SDLT however as soon as the paperwork went through to transfer our marital home to XH, I applied for, and was given, a rebate of the additional SDLT paid.
