Trouble with builders - advice needed

Hi all, need some advice from those who have managed builders/trades/contractors.

We have contracted in a brickwork company to take the paint off our house and re-point.

It has been a nightmare since the start with damage to our property, major delays, lack of communication, disgruntled neighbours. The latest is that we were told the job would be complete two weeks ago, but the date came and went, no-one has been onsite and, despite daily requests for information, the foreman has disappeared/not responded.

I called CAB who said to check with Companies House if they have gone bust (which I did and they haven't) and write them a formal letter saying we will have no choice but to seek legal advice if things weren't resolved by X date.

I have written the letter but am nervous about sending it and wanted to ask you guys for advice/hear your experience before I do.

Thanking you in advance. We just want the job to be done!

Have you paid them? If so how did you pay?

We paid in instalments once each phase was complete in cash. We haven’t made the final payment for the facade at the front.

However, we paid the first instalment for the back of the house once the scaffolding had gone up (They haven’t started any work on the back. We said they couldn’t until they showed us they could raise their game on the front). This means that they essentially have the same amount as if we’d paid for the whole of the front. Hope that makes sense. Shout if not.
