Child proofing a thumb turn lock

Toddler DS is close to being able to open our back door, which has a thumb turn lock. Is there a way of child-proofing it or will we have to replace the lock?

Couldn't you just put a bolt high up on the door ?

Not easily, red - it’s the final panel of a run of bifolds so the frame is aluminium. Thanks though.

Would a cupboard lock style thing work? The ones that stick on? Put high up so he can't reach it.
Or you can buy guards that go over cooker knobs, maybe something like that?
There must be a way of doing it, even if it's a bodge job for the time being.

That’s a good idea, lisbon. Thank you.

We ended up putting a security chain on ours. A local bloke from a window company came out and drilled it/fitted it properly for us.

I was wondering about some kind of childproof cage or cap which could sit over the actual thumb turn knob. We quite often come in and out through the back door and if at all possible I’d like to preserve the ability to come in through the back with a key. I’ll give it up for a few months if it means ensuring that he doesn’t end up in the garden every five minutes, though!

is it a door fitted with a Eurocylinder?

The cylinder can easily be removed, and replaced with one key-operated from both sides.

Don't get into the habit of leaving the key in the lock.

Get a key-cabinet, or at least put a cup-hook high up and out of sight at the top corner of the doorframe, furthest from the opening, for the key.

Be aware that removing the thumbturn may prevent your escape in an emergency.

Have just ordered 2 of these to replace existing thumb turns.
