Very excitingly, we should soon have the funds to build a small porch onto the front of our house. Our front door opens straight into the living room and we are in an exposed position, with the prevailing wind hitting the front of the house - so this should make everything much warmer and save us plenty on heating oil and firewood. We are very excited!
DH, his dad and his brother are a pretty competent and methodical bunch when it comes to diy, so we plan to do as much of the work as we can ourselves - digging the footings, laying the slab and brickwork. We will most likely need someone to do the glazing and will definitely get a qualified person in to do the wiring for lights.
It will be within permitted development rules so no need for planning permission.
We currently have a Rock door and plan to get that moved to the front of the porch when it’s up, and will probably have a wooden door into the house itself - an external one for security and warmth.
So questions are - has anyone undertaken this sort of project? What were the rough costs and potential pitfalls? Has anyone had a door removed and moved - this should be possible, right?
Also, AIBU to be this bloody excited about a porch, or am I being a total saddo?
