How do you find out where your public sewers run?

Getting a home extension, right at the beginning stage.
There is a man hole cover right outside my house, which would be within the footprint of the extension.
I've lifted it up and asked neighbours to flush their Loos, nothing so I assume it just a private sewer for my house.

According to the drainage plans (which are 10 years old to be fair) I had from buying my house, their should be a public sewer running through my garden. I should have a manhole cover in the middle of my lawn (and so should my immediate neighbour) but neither of us have one and we have very tidy gardens, no way I couldn't see one - unless it is under a patio or decking that was in the garden when I bought it - but those areas are on the edge so I don't think they are hiding a manhole?

I guess I can buy new plans, but if they show the same thing - manholes that don't exist - what do I do then?

I don't want to pay an architect/planning etc for plans I can't use because a builder finds the sewer when they start digging the foundations?
