We've exchanged on our lovely new house today. Went under offer just before Christmas and had an offer accepted on th same day. All been very friendly and smooth so far, minimal issues. Lovely.

We're completion next week though. Relocating to a nearby town so need to sort DS's school move. What the hell else should be on my To Do list for the week?

Have booked removals people. Need to redirect mail for a couple of months. I sense this will be a long list

If your seriously asking this then you need to get busy.
Unless you have booked your movers to pack, pack.
Notify family & friends.
Contact utility companies and arrange to transfer accounts. You will need to supply exit readings for all meters from both old address and new address.
Do you have satellite or cable tv / phone / broadband? If so talk to your provider. It may take time to switch service to new address.
Put together a detailed list of every organisation and person you need to tell you have moved. Eg banks, building societies, credit cards, mobile phone, universal credit. They seem
Tell your council tax dept you are moving out & the new one when you are moving in.
You might want to put a bag of stuff together that you do not want to go in the van. Tea, coffee, milk, kettle, mugs, over night things, change of clothes etc etc...

Bloody thing posted too soon.
Basically every single aspect of your life that ties you to the old address needs to be notified and shifted.
Finally, don’t forget to divert your post and good luck

Thanks @Grumpyunleashed ! Yes, we have a lot to do - it's all happened v quickly. I'm just conscious that I don't want to miss anything. Your list is really useful so thanks!

wow! Ok:

  • insurance on new house from exchange, i.e. yesterday
  • arrange removals, I think you are too late to pack yourself and you will have a real scramble to find a remover so fingers crossed.
  • set up post redirect to start from completion for six months

before move:

  • contact new utility suppliers, as mentioned take readings at both properties so you can close off old accounts and start new ones. You take over the suppliers at the new place and then change as you wish.
  • set up broadband and phone at new place, this takes time
  • council tax as mentioned
  • car insurers need to know before move

ASAP after move:

  • change car V5 and then driving licences; it is an offence and a fine to 'forget' to do this
  • GP and dentist

then start all the other address changes. You need the redirect as banks etc will send a letter to your old address too. Keep a list and keep at it.

reminder: if you are selling you need to be completely out at completion, so multiple van runs don't work.

good luck!

You need five days to set up a post redirection so do that today online.

ItsPeanutButterJelly · 08/02/2020 20:42

Thanks @wowfudge - good to know. Will do that tonight.

@mencken - we got quotes for removals and pencilled someone in a couple of weeks ago so luckily that's sorted. We haven't got a huge amount to pack (most of it's in furniture or some sort of storage already and the removals guys will take as is, so happy we can do that over the week.

I've got a more comprehensive looking list now so lots to crack on with - thanks all
