Hello! I live in a small barn in Somerset. The current name (The Old Barn) doesn't really work for us as it's too similar to the neighbour's (The Old Dairy). Another neighbour also is The Cow Shed. It's now just a converted agricultural building, with no specific features (and therefore no proper links), though apparently it used to be used as a milking parlour. Not sure I like "The Milking Parlour" and anything with "The Old..." or "Cow" isn't ideal due to neighbours. I'm thinking maybe "The Byre"? Really hoping one of you comes up with some genius idea as my creativity is lacking a bit! No names too ridiculous at this point! Thanks in advance x

be radical and just give it a number !

mclover · 04/02/2020 13:45

Have a look around - are there any good trees or flowers that grow in the area, or anything else that stands out? So it could become 'The Oak Barn' or 'Wildflower Barn' etc

I opened the thread with the intention of suggesting Belle End but some1 beat me to it Grin

SoupDragon · 04/02/2020 14:09

anything with "The Old..." or "Cow" isn't ideal due to neighbours

So, not "The Old Cow" then...

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2020 14:13

Dunmilkin?

AmIAWeed · 04/02/2020 14:14

Our house name when translated means Thorny Bush. I do like to welcome people to my thorny bush

I really dislike house names though, delivery drivers can't find us so now my house name is expanded to 'Thorny Bush, opposite the pub'

Lower Barn
Little Barn

or what about some local history? Did anything happen nearby you could incorporate?

SecretSquirrel01 · 04/02/2020 14:18

Ha ha! Some great ideas so far! Thanks everyone! Belle End and Dunmilkin are serious contenders so far. Grin

Sadly numbers don't exist on our country lane.

Does the original farm have a name?

SecretSquirrel01 · 04/02/2020 14:20

@haverhill only a murder about 150 years ago Shock , otherwise just boring countryside!

SecretSquirrel01 · 04/02/2020 14:22

More context - on top of a big hill, so windy (@MikeUniformMike Wink) and good views over countryside, with lots of sheep! No trees, just fields and hedges!

HoHoHolly · 04/02/2020 14:22

Any features of the building at all - Gables, Keystone House? Are there any trees you can work with -Holly Lodge, The Rowans etc? Something to do with what you can see out of the window - Field View kind of thing. Ask the neighbours for ideas.

Not sure but I think "byre" means cowshed, so it's possibly even more similar to your neighbour.

I'm presuming it's one of those roads that doesn't have numbers so it does need a name.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 04/02/2020 14:23

There’s would be the byre if they’re in the cowshed.

I think mclover’s idea is best. Find out something local to it and add it to barn.
Swifts Barn, three oaks barn, name of farm barn

SecretSquirrel01 · 04/02/2020 14:24

@SoupDragon Ha ha, no Old Cow is the person that lives there Wink! It's Upton Farm, but Upton Barn has issues as it sounds too similar....

Milky Way (Barn/Hill/Meadow?)

whatevertr · 04/02/2020 14:30

Is it North/East/west/South facing?

Northwinds
Westwinds

Etc

Frenchw1fe · 04/02/2020 14:32

The archaic word for a barn is grange. It's still used in France.

Bewarethequietboy · 04/02/2020 14:32

Might be worth checking with your local authority before you apply to change the name, it took me about 15 goes to find something they would accept for our self build house. They had a policy document on the website, They wouldn’t allow anything already contained within another name in that postcode, or the surrounding area. Or a made up word. But it was really hard to think of something. There’s lots of tree names in our village, oak, maple, Apple, ash, etc, or any landmarks/ named hills you look onto? Or an old Somerset name for a geographical feature? Local watercourse names?

You may have to pay to change the name too.

slinkysaluki · 04/02/2020 15:22

Wits End Smile

slinkysaluki · 04/02/2020 15:23

Love Belle End suggestion though 😄

slinkysaluki · 04/02/2020 15:25

How about combining you and your partners names or kids names to make up a house name or is that in bad taste ?
