Would you be happy with the way this laminate was fitted?

Husband came home from work before me and paid the fitter. My husband doesn't really have an eye / care about these kinds of thing so had a look could see that it had all been laid and said OK and paid the guy.

I've come home and noticed gaps between the boards. I don't know if it's something that I should just live with or try and get the guy back to move them?

This is an example of one board, but there's about 4 / 5 over the room where I can see the joins.

What would you do?

Has it been allowed to settle, it’ll need 24 hours to acclimatise but it does look a bit too gappy.

That does look like it's not fitted very well to me. Most laminate I've seen has pretty flawless joins, otherwise water etc can damage it by penetrating the edges.

I'm terribly British about these kinds of things. How do I tell the guy that he's going to have to come back and relay it? I'm the type that says "yes, that's fine thanks" when a hairdresser has totally butchered my hair.

I think he's going to have to pretty much pull it all up and start again.

No I wouldn’t be happy with that. But I’m also the type of person that says thanks to the hair dressers and then goes home to cry... Grin I do think you need to get him back to sort it out though.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 23/01/2020 19:46

Isn’t it all out of alignment as well? It would drive me crazy

fastliving · 23/01/2020 19:57

You just have to put your big girls pants on (or make your husband do it as he was home) - or be pissed offer every-time you look at the floor.
Hair grows back...the floor isn't going to magically be laid better unless the fitter comes back (or you do it yourself?)

Bootsuit · 23/01/2020 19:59

The alignment is OK, there's a glare on the photo which makes it look like it's out.

The fitter is really friendly and we've booked him to do some more work for us next month (not fitting laminate!) so I don't think it would be a problem getting him to come back. I just feel bad for him because it's going to be a days work again. But then if he had done a proper job to begin with then he wouldn't have to be coming back.

Here's another section of the floor with a gap.

I guess I just want to know that I'm not being unreasonable to get him back in to fix it, but I'm not brave enough to post it on AIBU!

That would drive me crazy, the zig zags don't match, looks like there's 5mm between them??

Bluntness100 · 23/01/2020 20:15

Yeah he's fairly messed that up. It's all out of kilter. If he does that bad a job it's unlikely he will come back,,

Bootsuit · 23/01/2020 20:17

Ha the zig zags aren't a defined match, once you see it all fully laid out it is aligned. It's a design flaw rather than the work of the fitter that it looks mismatched. I can live with that.

This is the display sample. You can see that it's not aligned there either. It's the design of the boards. I'm not bothered about that. It's not obvious whe you look at the floor in its entirety.

Each board has a tongue and groove ‘lock’ on the edge of it that can sometimes be quite tight. It’s clearly not been hammered in thoroughly. I’d question whether he’s actually ever laid laminate before as it’s a piece of piss job once you get cracking.

If you’re really chicken you could tell him you think it’s expanded a bit and some sections have moved slightly so could he come back and fix them?
