Attac hing our current floorplan. We are having the loft done this year, so much of the clutter in the dining room will shift upstairs...so we are thinking of using the front room as the lounge, then planning extension at the back to give us more space in the kitchen / turn the back in to a kitchen diner/family room. Just at planning stage but I just cant see how it would work! There is a small extension on the kitchen currently but could go further back as its a good size garden - my concern is though that if we push back too far that the current 'living room' will just end up as a bit of a non-room - or a dark corridor! Anyone have any ideas for me or done similar? 1930s semi. Thanks

To stop the current living room part becoming dark, you would ideally put a skylight where the extension meets the main house. So just where the living room bay window is at present. If you can work in a slope (so eg have a pitched extension or a sloped bit then flat) it works even better. Also obviously lots of glass at the back of the extension helps.

Also if you want a utility then cutting off the back bit of the living room (where it’s dark) and making that a tiny utility works well.

Have a look at this kitchen link they have done both the utility and the skylight, it really works.
