Painting render

We have a 5 year old house with white bumpy render on the front.

A couple of years ago we got some insulation put in as we were suffering with cold walls, condensation etc. Happily that was done for free with a government scheme. Initially the drill holes were invisible but the filler has gone darker than the rest of the render so looks a bit rubbish.

I want to get it painted but I seem to remember being that the render couldn't be painted but then again not sure if I've made that up! Been googling cant see a reason why not. I am aware it will be a big job and will have to get someone in to do it because its textured. Sure lots of local painters will agree to do it but dont want the paint peeling off a few months later! Any advice?

We did our own, not a difficult job at all.

Was it old render or new? My neighbour seems to also think we were told not to paint it but cant think why
