Painting a bare wood garage door

This is at my brothers house. He has just had a new door installed on his garage ( it’s a single door and the garage is used for storage not for a car if that makes any difference). What sort of treatment and paint is most appropriate for the door to weatherproof it? Any tips? Best brands? Many thanks.

Primer, undercoat, then top coat (or two) of gloss suitable for outside use.

Thank you seeline that is very useful.

Gloss???? No no no! Exterior eggshell for wood. No one uses gloss anymore. It’s too difficult to apply. Eggshell is very hard wearing, doesn’t go yellow and is a far superior product. Don’t buy gloss. Ever.

@ thanks for this, but am I right in thinking exterior eggshell is mostly done by the premium brands such as Farrow and Ball, little greene etc? I couldn’t find it on the Dulux website. Without wishing to patronise him, my brother has mental health difficulties, his home looks pretty rough to be honest and really it’s a question of weatherproofing the door. It doesn’t need to look lovely, gloss would be ok for his needs.

Yes, I suspect premium paints. However it’s waaaay easier to apply. So it’s cost vs mega hassle! Plus a better end product that might make everyone happier!

Why shouldn’t someone with MH problems have a lovely door?! Go for it.

Dulux do an exterior satin for wood.

Thanks @BubblesBuddy. I realise the statement sounds a bit off. Long backstory, but basically he’s a hoarder who should downsize but lives on in our late parents’ home. However he is taking on various home maintenance tasks and does episodically try and get rid of stuff, on his own terms. I do my best to support him. He’s quite price conscious but I don’t mind buying a F&B pot of paint for him. He’d baulk at the price
