Stained skirting boards - wwyd?

Throughout our house we have stained skirting boards and architraves (stained with dark brown varnish, not actual stains!). We’ve lived in our current house for 10 years and have barely done anything to them in that time, they are so low maintenance. However, they don’t look great, they are very dark and do look quite shabby in places.
My heart would love them to be painted white which I think would transform the house and make it so much brighter. However, at our previous house we had white gloss skirting and it was quick to acquire a yellow tinge after painting and the gloss paint was horrible to work with.
An alternative would be to strip the current varnish and re-stain in a lighter colour but I’m guessing this would be very time consuming and messy too.
The only other option is to go over the varnish in s similar colour which I’m not really keen to do.
Has anyone done similar and got any advice please?

We don't live in the Gloss era any more.

Wash it with sugar soap, then use eggshell or acrylic paint.

I've recently painted over dark varnish, and I've used a Zinser Bullseye primer on it first. Can't tell you how it'll hold up, as it's not long been done, but I did quite a bit of research first and this seemed to get good reviews.

I like a flat while finish - Little Greene wood paints are lovely, they go on so nicely and have a great finish.
