Non-slip stair paint - experience?

Have rather given up on getting a replacement staircarpet fitted - no-one seems to want to even quote!! So DH wants to paint them - but I am terrified of slipping - or worse, an elderly relative doing so. (I also worry they will be noisy, but I guess we get to test that out when we rip off the old manky carpet....)

DH reckons the oiled wood stairs in the extension are less slippy than the worn out carpet inn the house, but I'm not sure I agree.....there are however some specialist stair paints that claim to be non-slip (I mean the indoor type, not outdoor concrete paint with gritty bits in!)

he sent me this link to a few: www.whatpaint.co.uk/by-object/stairs but no-one seems to have tried it out and run up and down stairs to test the nonslippiness.

Has anyone got experience of this - and if it really is non-slip, does dirt also stick to it enthusiastically?

I have had it for 10 years and never slipped

You can get clear stair edge strips that stick to the step and are a bit rough so your fit has something to grip a little on the bare wood. We're getting rid of our carpet and using those as a relative has then and says they really work. Maybe with the non-slip paint?

Ooh thank you both - that's encouraging. @lifeisgoodagain - is it reasonably easy to keep clean? And can you remember what sort you used?

Thanks again!

I’ve recently painted mine using Little Greene floor paint.

Not sure it’s marketed as non slip... but it isn’t slippery. Only running and cycling socks seem a little slippery. That’s not a joke.

It’s white and grey oil based paint and appears to be very tough. It shows every bit of dust... but of course it’s easy to vacuum and wipe down.

Thanks MillStone. If even non-non slip can be OK, we might be OK with specialist non-slip . And If I still worry I'm going to break my neck we can always put a carpet down afterwards... Smile
