Stove question - can a gas one do as much as a real one?

It's said that woodburning stoves can heat the whole house via [science science warmth spreading etc], but they have a number of downsides so I wasn't really keen on one. They do those gas fires that look like stoves. I assume - but I don't really know the science here - that the gas one would not be able to heat the whole house, or even a wider area, than just its own room - it'll just be a warm fan, right, and won't heat as much as a stove? Or am I wrong and the gas one could warm other rooms by putting out heat in the same was as a real one?

My in laws have an expensive gas log burner. To me, there’s no comparison. It just looks like an expensive gas fire!

We had a specialist round to quote for a woodburner and he stressed that it wouldn't heat the whole house, just the room it was in.
