Inspired by the kitchen ideas thread, I'd love to hear/see how your kitchen islands are laid out.
We're planning our new kitchen and it will incorporate a 2m x 1.5m island. The only thing I'm certain of is that the sink will be on the island. What do you have under your island...? Dishwasher? Cupboards/drawers (and if so what's stored in them?)? Wine fridge? I'm also considering a small seating area for a couple of stools...

Place marking this as we are also planning a new island and thinking of something a bit different. Just a thought - why do you want the sink on the island? We have had two previous islands. One with a sink and one with a large range. I much preferred the large range one as the sink one was permanently a tip (and we are a v tidy family) especially at parties as there was always washing up or drying up on it (even with a dishwasher). That said I wasn’t mad about having a range in mine either as I hated the extractor hanging from the ceiling. Which is why I am now watching with interest for the best configuration 😁

I did it two years ago. Size 3 x 1.5 and planned in the sink etc....talked out of it and best thing I did. It now a a lovely large top, some flowers etc but that's all and is great to sit around. Can use as a workspace but don't need to with the size of the kitchen

Cupboards underneath plus a wine cooler. Space two sides to sit around. Only regret is I wish we had the quartz rounded at the ends we sit at.

Don't spoil it putting plugs in the top unless you intend to use appliances. Put underneath where you sit which is neat and where you need them

Oh....and put in speaker wires where ever you need them. It will save a bloody fortune on wireless ones which cost a mint if they are decent. I suggest the ceiling. Even just put them in, and leave on top of the plaster board if not sure!

We have nothing on ours and so pleased. Nice and easy to keep clean. Just 2 sets of wide pan drawers underneath

We have nothing on ours either 1.8x 1.5..underneath a freezer ,a pullout bin and a cupboard with drawers we use for spices etc ...otherside 3 doors ....I didn't want anything on my Island and very pleased I didn't ...my sink always has a cup or plates on the drainer and you may need to be very careful with drips and runs of water ..just a thought

I wouldn't recommend a sink in it, no one wants to sit looking at dirty dishes. Or even a sink. I'd recommend a redesign think.

Ours is a peninsular, it's large and seats 8-10. There is nothing on it. But there is cupboards under it. People seem to congregate there.

We have nothing on ours which I love and we also have the bar stools on the corner so it's 2 by 2. We find it much more sociable than everyone being in a line.

This is ours

We have a 0.9 by 2.7. One side has the freezer, three drawer units for pans and baking dishes etc and a 30cm wine cooler. Other side has half overhang for seating and half open shelves 30cm deep. We have the induction hob on it and a very small extraction unit up in the ceiling which isn’t noticeable.

I have my veg prep sink on mine and my induction hob with one of the ovens underneath. I also pan drawers at the side of the hob but if I didn’t have one of the ovens there I would put the pan drawers under the hob.

I also have the waste bins on the Island, cupboards on the reverse with the water softener in one. I have the wine fridge in my laundry. I would not want my main sink on an island. We do have pop up sockets. As you can see we have a wooden built in table and it has cupboards under so no space for sockets. I use various appliances on the Island. Ones I keep in the cupboards. I think the Island is over 3m long so a shorter one would need good planning. It also depends what sort of cook you are. I have other ovens and a large double sink elsewhere in the kitchen. I like cooking on the hob whilst being able to see guests and family and I don’t have my back to them.

Thank you for all your opinions - and special thanks to those who shared photos, I've got total kitchen envy!
I'm 100% certain I want some sort of sink on the island, but I hadn't heard of a veg prep sink before and I love that idea! Found some photos on Pinterest if anyone else is interested. We've got space to have the main sink elsewhere so that would get rid of the dirty dishes!

@follygirl love the look of your island. Can you tell me what size it is?

follygirl · 31/05/2020 16:51

It’s 2.6m by 1.3m. The quartz is 30mm thick which we preferred.
