Help me please.

How the fudge do.tou find a good roofer or builder?

Got a leaky roof problem. It affected inside as well. We're limping along best we can but can't dry out until the problem is fixed.

Had insurance surveyor out who gave us an indication of the issue (But we can't claim but we have savings for this kind of disaster). Probably whole back may need refelting or if the damaged area of felt can be located it may just be a patch job.
Tbh ..im happy to fork put for the whole back to be refelted as its probably more cost effective than paying labour for someone to find the actual hole/s which could take days in itself. Anyway the point I'm making is I'm open to what a decent roofer advises is best course of action and say this in my messages I leave.

Surveyor suggested I start with Federation of Master Builders. Only 3 in my area. 2 said on phone they only do building projects not repairs. 3rd roofer had not called me back.

I've gone through Check a trade and Yell. I've phoned 18 other local roofers/builders this week leaving messages for a call back to discuss work/quote etc and none have called me back. 3 that said they would come to quote have not turned up.

I'm nice and polite on the phone. I say I'm open to thier opinion of works needed etc.
What the he'll am I doing wrong?
How can I do d a roofer or builder? Am.actually getting really distressed now because it's always raining at the moment.

Any advice??

I think all you can do is persevere with contacting them again and again or if there is an office then pop in. I think things may get worse with Brexit as builders return home to Europe.

ReallyLoveChickens · 15/11/2019 11:12

Where are you based? My husband is a well respected and trusted roofer who always returns calls!

womanaf · 15/11/2019 11:13

Ask local friends if they know anyone. It’s the only way we ever got anywhere.

Hi, I've already scanned local FB groups and found done on there that have not returned my calls. I've asked on my private FB page (friends can see it) for recommendations.
One roofer is coming out tomorrow now, he was a recommendation from a friend of a friend. All I know is his name is Doug. No other info on him or his exact trade even.but I'm getting desperate.

Sadly I'm.quite new to the area and only have a small network of friends locally. I've already asked several neighbours bit no one seems to know anyone.

I'm so peed off i feel like crying.

That’s seriously unprofessional. DH is a builder and always returns calls even if it’s something he cannot do or doesn’t have time for. Where are you based? Pm me if you like.

Ouchmyleg · 15/11/2019 16:06

It’s almost impossible. We’ve been trying to get quotes for an extension and it’s exhausting.

BlastEndedSkrewt · 15/11/2019 16:08

my DH is in the building trade & returns calls when messages are left but returns calls mostly in the evenings as when a customer is paying a day rate it's not right for him to use that time on the telephone.

LeakyRoofLady · 15/11/2019 16:08

Not that I'd wish this predicament on anyone but I'm kind of relieved to hear it's not just me. I was beginning to question if I come across as rude or abrupt or something.

Oh leaky 💐

It’s a bit shit, isn’t it? I was in exactly the same boat. But then the roofer knew a plumber and the plumber knew a painter and so on and once you find someone, finding others becomes much easier...

Fingers crossed for Doug...

My mum had a similar problem during the summer.
A roofer that I had used in the passed and was very impressed with, initially said they couldn’t come out for a couple of weeks and then when she said that’s ok they then said sorry we are too busy.

During the summer they all seemed to be busy working on houses having extensions built and not interested in smaller jobs.

Hi I am a roofer my company is Phil Wilson roofing and building services if you want to see my, work and get in touch I would be more than happy to help you with the work you need addressing many thanks Phil Wilson

LeakyRoofLady · 15/11/2019 20:49

In was hoping because it's winter I might have got lucky. Surely it's mainly repairs at this time.of year. Not many people choose large projects in November and December I would have thought.
I'm even considering whole new felt for the roof so it's not like it's a small job not worth thier bother either.
I've found another one tonight via Facebook but too late to call now. Shall I message him via messenger or call him tomorrow? Os it ok to call on a Saturday??

If there is any building going on local to you, have a look and see who the roofing company is and give them a ring.

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/11/2019 20:57

I have been there.

Did finally find one.

Apart from the guy who did do it I only had 2 others who called me back and came round to give me a quote.

One guy quoted me £16,000 for a job that was done for £4000

The other changes his accent every few sentences and the only thing he had done was his gfs small flat roof

Tracyphil · 15/11/2019 21:03

Vanwinkle · 16/11/2019 11:05

Hi I just read your your thread and know how difficult it is to find a roofer when calling them and they don't return your calls... Also had roofers come out and had to call them a couple of times to get a quote... I agree it is very distressing because, I myself became distressed trying to find a roofer... I have so much to say but would rather explain on the phone...
