Runner carpet for stairs

I have an old house, built circa early 1900s.

Have been slowly doing each room up. Leaving hall to last. Ripped hall carpet up and discovered that the stair treads underneath are in pretty good condition and will look great after a sand and varnish. The stairs lead to a half landing and then turn and go up again.

I love the look of a carpet runner up the stairs, but I know that they are really expensive and I'm not sure I can afford it. I don't want to just leave it bare wood as I think it could be slippy with the kids running up and down, not to mention the noise.

Anyone got any budget friendly suggestions?

I dont know what your budget id but there is a good range on here .

I strongly recommend you do not get a carpet like this

or this
www.wayfair.co.uk/rugs/pdp/union-rustic-abner-flatweave-red-stair-runner-rngu1296.html
as horizontal repeating patterns make it hard to see the edges of the step clearly when you are descending.

A place I worked at mamy years ago had this type of patterned carpet fitted but had to have it ripped out within weeks because so many people fell going when going down stairs !

Thank you.
I love Wayfair and I'm on it regularly but never even thought to check for carpets. I'll give them a look.

In terms of budget, I wouldn't be wanting to spend more than 1k, preferably around the £800 mark

Come at a premium price unfortunately, but great for ideas. I have a staircase that turns three times and was told that stripes would be difficult to match, although I have seen many pictures where it doesn’t seem to be a problem!

I Love this.

Probably not helpful if you really want a runner, but I've left my stairs bare wood & it's not too slippy or noisy.

I’ve done it myself! Without the rods it really isn’t expensive, cost me £80 including nice thick underlay and took me a day including ripping out the old carpet, sanding down and painting white. I went with an end of roll runner I liked the look of from some online company.

@Toodeloo - would you mind saying where you got the end of roll runner from? £80 sounds much more like my budget! Grin
