Portsmouth & surrounding areas-any thoughts?

As we have an impending work related move to the area, does anyone have any thoughts on the best places to raise a young family in the Portsmouth/Waterlooville/Havant/Leigh Park/Fareham/Gosport areas?

Litle lapin directed me here. I don't know how she thinks I can help though.

I don't live in Portsmouth - and certainly not in Paulsgrove as she seems to think. I live in Fareham in married quarters and it is horrible. The whole area is in fact horrible and I wouldn't choose to live here.
I haven't yet seen a playpark for children, although the school my two go to is ok.

Everyone said noooooooooooooo when I mentioned that our first offer of an MQ was in paulsgrove. Thankfully because of the hill and the fact the house had loads of steps up to it, we got a doctors note and got a quarter in fareham.

Sidge- would you mind saying which areas in Gosport you'd avoid and why? Also- can anyone tell me why there seem to be a lot of houses in Gosport where parking is in a common parking area away from the house instead of near your house? We've seen quite a few in our search!
Thanks again, everyone.

Nenner - I personally would avoid Forton, Elson, some bits of Gosport town and certain bits of Rowner. Gosport is a funny place in that the whole area changes within a couple of streets in certain areas.

I think the best thing is to stay a few days and drive around and see where you like. Or let me know details of houses that you have seen online/in real life and I can let you know if they are in a nice area or not!!

Saltire - if you are where I think you are then you are not that far from me. Fancy a cuppa and a huge wedge of cake one day??

This might be a bit late but I thought I'd wade in anyway. I've lived in this area all my life. My parents live(d) in Gosport, so I grew up there, and I now live in Southsea.

To be brutally honest, I would avoid Gosport like the plague. Especially Forton, Elson, Rowner and Gosport town, exactly as Sidge said. Frankly, it's because of the violence I/friends all witnessed when we were teenagers. I don't want to scare you, but I'd seriously consider if you can afford not to live there (Gosport is officially the cheapest place to buy a house on the south coast- apparently). Don't get me wrong, there's been no shootings, to my knowledge, and young kids are pretty safe, but it all seems to get a bit scary when they grow up.

It's also almost completely devoid of anything to do, and although there's a ferry/night ferry to get you over to Portsmouth proper, I find it rather a palaver.

Southsea, on the other hand, I can't recommend highly enough. Much safer, nicer 'feel', way, way, more to do, easier access to other parts of the city for work/socialising. Not too sure about senior schools, as most are private, but the one that's not is not bad at all. Plenty of nice primaries. BUT, the traffic can get really bad. I don't drive, so perhaps that's why I love Southsea so much. Having said that, Gosport's traffic is possibly even worse, it's not an island, like Pompey, but it's a peninsula, with one, yes one, road out to the big bad world.

I realise that's only two of your possibilities, but hopefully this is useful for them.

I used to commute into Portsmouth every day from Locks Heath. Locks Heath, Park Gate and Warsash are lovely. Bursledon also wouldn't be too much of a stretch. You've got the lovely River Hamble on your doorstep. Personally I've never been keen on Havant, Cowplain, Portsmouth or even Southsea.

DaphneduM · 11/12/2021 18:17

I've just been told off by my husband, he says Southsea is lovely if you like the sea!!!!!

Hilsea · 12/12/2021 22:57

Southsea is fabulous! We moved here four years ago from London and absolutely love it. We are five minutes walk from the seafront and a short walk or cycle to Southsea town centre with Portsmouth and other areas within a 1-2 mile walk/cycle. Plus the Isle of Wight and Fratton station also nearby we can get anywhere!

As the OP posted this in 2007, I think they've probably moved by now Hmm
