Glossy kitchens - tell me i have not made a huge mistake!

Know this has been done but think i am hoping for a different answer.
I have placed and order for a dark blue glossy kitchen which i loved - searched everywhere for a blue one. Was in someones house last night with a black glossy kitchen and she said it was a pita! Constant fingermarks and endless cleaning.

Feel now i have made a big mistake. I can possibly change the colour but dont want white since the worktops are white and i am afraid it wont match - and my last kitchen was white and i wanted a change.

No children in the house and only two adults so hoping that will make a difference. Or will i just look at it and order takeaways forever!

How have your gloss kitchens been?

I have a petrol blue gloss kitchen, no issues with finger prints or smearing!
Excuse the frazzles & g&t! Classy 😄

I’ve got glossy anthracite coloured cupboards and I regretted it within three days.

I’m the only one who uses the handles to close them so the fingerprints are a nightmare.

Humphriescushion · 06/11/2019 15:17

That's nice help. Is it the lighter shades which make it easier.

I've got black gloss - had it 9 years. It's totally fine re marks/smears! We have brushed steel handles. I had a few reservations before we got it, but we've had no issues at all. I'd have the same again, no issues.

Most of the units are directly opposite a window (which runs the full length of the kitchen), so it gets loads of light on it. If there were marks etc, they would easily show up.

If you have soft close doors/drawers, there's very little contact needed with the gloss anyway, so I'm not sure where all the marks would come from?!

Oh thats good to hear reviewing. Though most so far suggest a nightmare!

PM wouldn’t let me attach photos

Here are just a couple to show you the colour combinations. The photos look quite dark just because of time of day it is. The splashback behind cooker is nowhere near as dark as photo makes out. Hope this helps a bit!

I have white gloss cupboard and we had it for 3 years I just use microfibres clothes to wipe them and no problem with them. We are the family of 6

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 06/11/2019 20:40

Mid grey glossy kitchen here. It shows fingerprints but it's so easy to wipe down. I just use a microfibre cloth, 2 mins and it's done.

Humphriescushion · 06/11/2019 20:43

Thanks eddie and cecilla, think the lighter colours are more forgiving, seems the problem is with the dark colour.

Cecillia2016

We have very similar colour schemes, including the floor!

Love love love your curved cupboard. Wish I had gone for one x

Cecilia2016 · 06/11/2019 21:26

Thanks morley19 it was my husband who designed it and we wanted a lot of space especially we are the family of 6. X

Humphriescushion · 07/11/2019 06:58

Thank you everyone for your help and advice and the photos really help. I have zero imagination.
Seems it is the dark gloss that causes the problem and maybe i should avoid.
So looked on diy kitchens which was very helpful and like this on.
My kitchens will not be so swanky as this, but has lots of light. The worktops are the same i think. It is blue matt.

I've found the darker the colour the more the marks show up on hi gloss kitchens , white deffo showed the least marks

Humphriescushion · 07/11/2019 07:26

My last kitchen was white matt and whilst i loved it i really want a change and some colour.

mrssunshinexxx · 07/11/2019 07:27

@Humphriescushion can you change it to blue Matt instead ??

DaphneduM · 07/11/2019 07:35

That's a lovely kitchen. Maybe that's your answer then - still go for dark blue but in matte rather than gloss. The white worktop sets it off beautifully. Ironically in our black kitchen with white Corian worktops, we have just painted one wall dark blue and my husband fitted a dark blue blind (accompanied by much swearing!!!). Other three walls are white and we have a light limestone floor (terrible to keep clean!!!). Ironically it's this floor that's my bugbear, rather than the black gloss! I'm delighted with the overall effect though. I think you've set your heart on the blue, so I would go with that. Anything else will always seem a compromise.

Humphriescushion · 07/11/2019 07:38

@mrssunshinexxx yes i went to the shop yesterday and they have the range i have chosen in matt as well so not a complete disaster. I can also change the colour. I really like the kitchen above and would be happy to give up my glossy dream for a matt one if i can pull that one off!

Thanks @DaphneduM, your kitchen sounds lovely. I also put the wrong flooring in my last kitchen - thought it would be forgiving and it really really wasnt! Cleaning it all the time and i never looked nice at all. It is one of the reasons i so nervous about making the wrong choice. I like that kitchen above so the way to go is to try to replicate that.

humphriescushion

that is an absolutely gorgeous kitchen (it makes me want to redo mine!!) - go for it!

SeaSidePebbles · 07/11/2019 08:26

@Morley19, I need a splash back and yours is exactly what I had envisaged. Is it glass? Who fitted it?

DaphneduM · 07/11/2019 08:49

@Humphriescushion Thank you - because this kitchen was there already in our 'new' house, it's not as bad about the floor because it wasn't my choice! (I'm busy buying mats to cover up as much as possible!!!). But I absolutely agree about how important it is to not make a mistake - especially thinking of the amount of money involved! That kitchen you have shown in the picture is absolutely lovely, and I'm sure you'll love that colour when it's all done. Accessories can also make a difference too, once it's all done. How exciting to be choosing a new kitchen!

Humphriescushion · 07/11/2019 08:58

Thanks @Morley19 it is lovely isnt it. Challenge now is to get the right shade of blue.

Daphne, good point about accesories. It is exciting, have spent months choosing floors and got very stressed about it. Hopefully now i can relax and enjoy the journey at bit more. It is a new build - but small - so lots to think about.

Yeah it's not me that gets finger marks on them it's dh. He obv has big hands and even using the handles he still manages to finger mark the doors 😡 it only seems noticeable on 2 of our big wall units though. Wouldn't put me off buying it again.
