Glossy kitchens - tell me i have not made a huge mistake!

Know this has been done but think i am hoping for a different answer.
I have placed and order for a dark blue glossy kitchen which i loved - searched everywhere for a blue one. Was in someones house last night with a black glossy kitchen and she said it was a pita! Constant fingermarks and endless cleaning.

Feel now i have made a big mistake. I can possibly change the colour but dont want white since the worktops are white and i am afraid it wont match - and my last kitchen was white and i wanted a change.

No children in the house and only two adults so hoping that will make a difference. Or will i just look at it and order takeaways forever!

How have your gloss kitchens been?

If I were doing it again I'd go light or mid grey in matte

Humphriescushion · 06/11/2019 09:24

That is lovely morley. The cream with the worktop is stunning! And the birthday cake is fab - am starving now.

Oh sugar gold! My first choice if i have any option was to do dark blue in matt. Are the matt just as bad?
Is it the dark colour per se?

haha thanks! My sister made it for me, chocolate orange.

I find the cream gloss kitchen so much easier to keep clean than others in the past, especially as the doors are just flat too.

Two mins with glass cleaner and a cloth and the whole kitchen done

I was very nervous about the pale worktop and, to be honest, before the splashback went up I wasn't sure about it, but, as soon as I put it up it all came together.

Good luck. It is difficult to make these decisions, I remember agonising for ages over the colour of the worktop and then went through about 30 paint samples when deciding on the splashback

Light colours won’t be too bad but dark colours will constantly be smeary. DM has one and it always looks filthy. Sorry OP!

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/11/2019 09:41

I'd be more worried about the grooves to open the doors, I broke loads of fingernails on ours.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/11/2019 09:45

When glossy kitchens were fashionable in the 80's I had a dark blue and cream one, I loved it. It had handles so the only marks were from fingers that missed the handles or the odd row of fingers along the edge of the doors.

If you have a few members of the household it might not be as simple as that though.

HuggedTrees · 06/11/2019 09:49

If you’re happy to clean it then keep it. I have dark blue and love it but none gloss and not a fan of the handle grooves. Go with what you love and don’t regret it!

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 06/11/2019 09:52

With only 2 adults you'll be fine...

You just need to train your OH to clean too 😉

I had cream gloss with grey composite worktops in my last house (with sparkle bits in it) - plus accent doors in walnut gloss on the fridge freezer. The whole thing was very forgiving in terms of dirt and finger marks - even with 2 house cats and 2 slovenly teens...

My new house has a mix of matt n gloss doors with an msg worktop... I miss my worktops most but the Matt doors never look clean either...

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 06/11/2019 09:53

That should be mdf nit msg - bloody auto correct!

WhoKnewBeefStew · 06/11/2019 09:56

Hate to say this but my parents have a gloss white kitchen, monumental pain in the arse to keep clean, shows finger prints and water/food marks. They also have the grooved doors to open with, can't tell you how many nails I've broken on their fucking integral fridge.

MintyMabel · 06/11/2019 09:56

Yes. You'll be forever cleaning it! I once had glossy dark worktops - not my choice- nightmare!

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 06/11/2019 10:01

You will have a cooling off period,is it too late to cancel and start again? I wouldn't go for dark gloss.

I nearly had a gloss kitchen and the fitters said no good for people with kids or pets so I took that to mean they were hard to keep clean!

I would go for light grey like the pp's photo above.

3luckystars · 06/11/2019 10:20

@12Morley19

That CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Atalune · 06/11/2019 11:07

I think you’ve made a mistake, sorry.

Went to a holiday house which was all glossy and it looked incredible. Until we got in there and the slightest mark showed.

PhasersTaeMalky · 06/11/2019 11:17

Not the same thing I know, but we have glossy black shower wall. It looks beautiful but it's impossible to clean. Every spot of water, pass of the cloth shows and so it always looks mucky even when just cleaned and polished. I would NEVER buy anything dark and glossy again.

Humphriescushion · 06/11/2019 13:11

Just back from kitchen shop. Good news is i can have any colour in gloss or matt and handless or handles so can change my mind! Thank goodness. Am very disappointed about the blue since my whole scheme was based around this kitchen. Not sure i can let it go and may convince myself it will be ok! But for now i will research into other combinations. May still go with gloss but in a lighter colour like photo above.

The salesman though told me that it was direct that was very unforgiving and showed me the difference in direct sun so this may be something to consider.

I have some breathing space though and is not a disaster yet!
Thank you for all your help and any suggestions/photos welcome. Have a white worktop with marble grey vein which is not changeable. Dekton.

Honestly I don't seem to have any issues. Just use a micro fibre cloth when you clean

Elzbells · 06/11/2019 13:17

I would stick to blue if you love it. Everyone has grey now including me.

I have light grey gloss and kids and a dog and 2 cats 😂 It's absolutely fine, never looks smeary and if I do get a mark a quick wipe with a micro fibre cloth takes care of it.

magicstar1 · 06/11/2019 13:25

I've a medium grey gloss and it does show up fingerprints, but it's really not too bad. I have a spray bottle with just washing up liquid and water in it. A quick spray and wipe over with a microfibre cloth brings them back perfectly. I use a microfibre mop for the bank of high units in the photo. Once in a while I use fabric softener instead and it does a great job of protecting against marks etc.

Morley19 · 06/11/2019 13:26

*humphriescushion’ I will pm you a better photo when I get home. Then at least you can see a full kitchen in a paler colour with pale tops

Humphriescushion · 06/11/2019 13:34

Thank you morley.

|We inherited a black bathroom and black granite kitchen worktops. Hate them. If the sun is shining in the kitchen, every mark stands out. They also collect white water tide marks everywhere which is annoying if you live in a hard water area. They never look clean.
We also have a cream bathroom and I much prefer it. It only needs a cursory wipe down. I would never have a dark colour again.
If it's not too late to change, do yourself a favour.

Ditzandspritz · 06/11/2019 14:03

I used to work in a kitchen showroom and we would always suggest to customers not to opt for a dark gloss. Gloss will show finger marks, every crumb, scratch or spec of dust which is a nightmare! I'm not keen on gloss at all, but a lighter gloss isn't as bad and a few of the bright colours (there was a mustard gloss in one range and a fire engine red) were also notorious for showing up Mark's.
