Kitchen Islands and Bifold doors

Has there been a kitchen extension built in the past few years which doesn’t have both of the above. Most of the kitchens don’t have space for an island and it looks squashed in. Where has this obsession come from? Also painting everything grey!
I’m guessing kitchen islands and bifold doors will be the avocado bathroom suites of the future!

Right @BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo, you wouldn't walk away from a house that's perfect except it has bifolds. It's cosmetic and easily changed. Ask to knock a few grand off maybe if you are that bothered but no, you'd fall over your feet to get a house that was perfect and not a major refurb.

GertiMJN · 14/11/2019 16:24

What are these buyers actually feeding back @Passmethegin11?

Are they saying they prefer to have darker rooms and more solid walls?

Or do they like the light but want to slide the door rather than push it ...

Because I simply can't think of any other objections to the mere notion of bifold doors Hmm. It just doesn't make sense.

And even if this was a deal breaker in an otherwise ideal home, they could just change it ...

GertiMJN · 14/11/2019 16:26

Oops sorry I meanlt to tag last post to @wineanddine23.

I would worry about old bifolds. The glazing units are going to fail, aren't they, and need replacing.

GertiMJN · 14/11/2019 18:04

I would worry about old bifolds. The glazing units are going to fail, aren't they, and need replacing.

But that applies to any glazed element. Doors, patio doors(sliding, hinged, bifold) and windows etc. ...It doesn't explain refusing a property on the basis of having bifolds...

senua · 14/11/2019 18:18

But that applies to any glazed element.
Yes. But the bigger the element, the bigger the cost.

I think that I am also put off because I fear that I would spend half my life cleaning the damn things.

GertiMJN · 14/11/2019 19:01

I fear that I would spend half my life cleaning the damn things

That is the most sensible objection I've read so far Grin

SchoolNightWine · 14/11/2019 19:19

...and the strange excuses keep coming! There's no more glass than in sliding doors so just the same cleaningConfused

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 14/11/2019 19:41

You can have self cleaning glass in bi folds......

Kitchen Islands and Bifold doors
GertiMJN · 14/11/2019 20:24

SchoolNightWine I assumed senua is in the camp that wants more wall, less light and so wouldn't want sliding doors either.

Betty I love the idea of self cleaning glass!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 14/11/2019 20:44

Me too! Gert if only I had discovered it before I had Velux windows put in......!

GertiMJN · 14/11/2019 20:58

So, life is looking up - self defrosting freezer, self cleaning oven, self cleaning windows, robot floor vacuum (closest I could think of for a self cleaning floor) ..if I could afford all those that is Grin

BustPipes · 14/11/2019 21:11

Right then. The conversation has been all about bifolds, yea or nay (I'm yay, for the record).

I think it's time we got back on track re kitchen Islands. Minging lumps of pointlessness (in suburban kitchens - lawks, the horror!) that make the space titchy and unusable, or beautiful tools in the fight against the patriarchy? (I'm fuck no, for the record.)

Africa2go · 15/11/2019 09:29

@BustPipes I'm a "Hell, Yes" Grin

But as with the bifold "debate" - essentially just a type of door, doesnt it depend on the type of island you have and the size of the room its in?

Before my long awaited extension, my kitchen was 4m × 3m and due to really awkward layout and massive chimney breast, it felt tiny. U shaped kitchen with 2 utterly pointless crap corner cupboards. No view, only room for the smallest table in the world, freezing. Island? Ha ha.

Kitchen is now 7m x 7m or thereabouts. Have room for island, table, seating area. I wanted a linear kitchen to avoid useless corners, with an island in front of line of units. Its 90cm by about 2.4m i think so pretty big. Masses of (useful) cupboard / drawer space, used everyday for breakfast (dinners at table), prep space, if i work from home, kids doing homework, -having a coffee looking through bifolds- Grin then as perching spot when we have friends over.

As i said at the beginning, its about how you live your life. For us (and everyone is different) it works - the island enhances how we function as a family. If it didnt, then yep, i agree, there's no point!

BustPipes · 15/11/2019 09:54

It sounds like you have a kitchen you're very happy with @Africa2go. Booooooo! SHAME!
Grin

Africa2go · 15/11/2019 10:04

I do. The 6 months of microwave meals and George Foreman delights (!) followed by washing up in the bath were almost worth it Confused Grin

LaMigraine · 15/11/2019 13:53

@HMBB Ahh, too late I'm afraid - green kitchens are already in! And apparently yellow kitchens are the next thing... Hmm (Info source: 10,000 different Instagram grids/interiors magazines which I have obsessed over constantly for the past year as our kitchen project rumbles on).

Maybe go for red/gold/multicoloured if you want to get ahead of the curve Wink

HighNetGirth · 15/11/2019 14:41

Where are we on pink kitchens (walls or units or tiles or anything)? Asking for a friend.

LaMigraine · 18/11/2019 09:06

@HighNetGirth I LOVE pink and pink kitchens are super trendy but I think they'll date so fast... Pink walls, maybe? Very easy to change if you feel so inclined in a few years. Tiles also easier to change than units, though still a bit of a pain/costly.

HighNetGirth · 18/11/2019 16:43

I think you're right. Dammit!

HuggedTrees · 18/11/2019 18:56

Who cares if it’ll date. If you like pink and want a pink kitchen then go for it
