6m by 4m room - kitchen living diner

Does anyone else have a room approx 6m by 4m and use it as a kitchen diner living space? If so I'd love to see your layouts and know whether you think it's big enough. We want to do this to a room, but worry there isn't quite enough space, but can't afford to extend. Hoping someone has some good ideas of how to make this work in the space we have!

If so, the 6m is the width, and backs onto the garden, ideally we'll have bifold or sliding doors all along this length. The door to the rest of the house is opposite this, offset slightly to one side. We will have a separate living room as well, and a utility room/toilet.

Thanks for any ideas people have!

with a 6x4 Space you can have a 3x4 kitchen at one side and 3x4 living area. Not sure you’d squeeze a dining area in though. Layout also really depends on where exactly that door is, any existing utilities, fireplace, radiators etc. Plot them on graph paper and play around with any ideas.
At the kitchen end you could have a U shaped kitchen (open part of the U facing your glass doors) with units along the 4m wall, floor to ceiling on the 3m wall (larder, fridge etc) and then a peninsula return with sink or hob so you can face into the room when cooking etc. (I don’t think they’d be walk around space for an island). The peninsula needs to be shorter than 4m for access but could certainly be around 3m. Given appliances are 60x60 you’d get a fair bit in.
Or sacrifice some of the 6m window and do a C shape kitchen. You’d have your back to the living space but it’d feel more spacious.
Visit some kitchen shops as some of their in-house designers will be able to give you advice too. Measure their kitchen layouts too.

I think that’s too small for all three. Have a big kitchen and dine in it! It could be wonderful. Adding lounge seating will make it very cramped. Having a built in dining bench works well in a corner. Add a couple of chairs and you have a lovely feature. I’ve also seen similar added to the end of kitchen runs and I would do this. A large kitchen is always “wow”. A small pokey one at one end of a medium sized room isn’t great.

Lipperfromchipper · 03/11/2019 00:38

I would say so! You just need to whittle down what you want! What shape is the room. I am renovating in a tiny cottage, the whole thing is 7m x 5m (externally) and it has two extra outhouses that were knocked through, one is the bathroom and the other is a storage/larder. So with that size I would think so, you just won’t fit full size furniture. I have a kitchenette with under counter fridge, talk wall cabinets, microwave, above sink drainer, two ring induction hob. All on one half of one wall. A fold up corner table against the wall. A fireplace and two chairs in front of the fire. It’s doable, Pinterest tiny living spaces, think of campervans and mobile homes and how much they fit!! You will make it work if you have too! We have two bedroom in the cottage too!! Each is 1.90 x 2.50 I think. 🙈😂

My kitchen is this size avd works as all 3 but I have a separate large dining room and separate large living room

I have an island with barstools and a couch seating area to the side. We spend most of our time in there. Do you have more reception space?

RJnomore1 · 03/11/2019 00:48

Mines is actually smaller - 3.5 x 6!

This isn’t the final design we added more units to the island etc but it ought be a start for you.

This sounds similar to mine - a small kitchen with a return, dining table the other side.
I will try to post a pic but you will need to ignore the mess! Waiting to refill the dishwasher!! French windows into the conservatory.

It depends on how much kitchen you want. I've got a similar area in one of my rental flats and there's a kitchen, a dining table for 6 and a corner sofa + armchair. However, the kitchen itself is a 4m run at one end. It's big enough for a 2-bed flat but I'd want more kitchen in a familiar home. I think you should be able to have an L shaped kitchen if you have a smaller table + don't end up with glazing all along one wall.

Have you thought of drawing up a plan?

lascilasci · 03/11/2019 16:44

Thanks all for the ideas. I've drawn up several plans but it always just seems a tiny bit small, so hence this post. So keen to see photos/floor plans of similar size rooms! Keep the ideas coming, thank you!

I'm about to knock through two rooms to make a 6m x 6m kitchen/dining/living. I'm finding the living bit somewhat tight.

Africa2go · 03/11/2019 20:05

We knocked down a wall between a kitchen and dining room to make a kitchen diner in a previous house. It was roughly 4.2m by 6.5m. We did have kitchen & dining table, and then a small 2.5 seater sofa with a wall mounted TV at the other end. It wasnt particularly spacious with the way we had to have furniture due to doors and windows, but it did the job. It was probably more of a kitchen diner with a sofa rather than a kitchen living diner if you see what I mean.

KanyesVest · 03/11/2019 20:23

I think that's what ours will be like, Africa. We'll have a two seater in an alcove but I'm finding it difficult to fit in the second two seater we have planned.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 03/11/2019 20:27

If you have a separate living room, don't try to squeeze one into your kitchen too - everything will be too crammed. Just make a nice kitchen diner.

Jemma2907 · 03/11/2019 20:39

We have pretty much this exact layout now that we have refurbed and knocked through dining room & kitchen. Will try and upload some pics. We love the layout and spend most of our day in there.

Jemma2907 · 03/11/2019 21:02

Hopefully this will work, I always seem to have trouble

Yes, i think you will struggle to get 2 sofas in there.

Jemma2907 · 03/11/2019 21:08

We love the open plan layout as it can all be moved around as and when required. We got a table that extends to sit 10 and would fit comfortably down the centre of the room. Like other posters have said it is less of a lounge and more like a kitchen/diner with sofa but if we had a smaller table and perhaps a more lounge like sofa it would feel more lounge-like. We have young children though so needed a washable sofa.

longearedbat · 03/11/2019 21:11

Don't think it's big enough personally. Also, you lose a lot of useable wall space by having one wall made up solely of glass.

lascilasci · 04/11/2019 20:15

@Jemma2907 what size is your room? Thank you for the photos, it looks good! I do think you're right, in that size it'd be kitchen diner with a sofa. So hard to know whether to bother doing it now, or wait until we can afford to extend (which might be never!)
