Karndean or laminate?

Northernlurker · 28/10/2019 20:54

I'm looking at new flooring for hall running though in to small dining room. Also v small understairs loo.

I could go Karndean or laminate which is literally 1/2 the price. If laminate then would put basic vinyl in the loo which doesn't bother me.

Karndean seems v expensive and I'm not sure it will make that much difference?

What would you do?

I went Karndean. Laminate is ugly and chips.

FREEM · 28/10/2019 21:10

laminate os harder to clean and is v v hard.
anything thats dropped on ot breaks and small children falling over etc its a nightnare

FREEM · 28/10/2019 21:11

ah sorry i mean karndean is harder to clean etc

We have karndean in all our downstairs rooms and bathrooms
We just use those wet wipes and hoover ...easy to keep nice....ours is grey kinda floor board look...we LOVE it

We've just had vinyl tiles put down in the hallway and kitchen. Karndean is expensive as you're effectively paying for the name apparently.

Our fitter friend uses karndean regularly but recommended Massimo to us.

Haven't seen a house yet where karndean doesn't look like anything other than lino, which is fine for bathrooms and kitchens but looks out of place in other areas.

Karndean is luxury vinyl you can many variations and brands. We looked at amtico and polyfor. I believe quickstep has now come along way. Check them all out go for a colour and price you’re comfortable for. I prefer LTV as it’s warmer under food and I think it looks good and mire hard wearing then real wood

Seberiska · 29/10/2019 08:47

Some laminates now have wet area warranties and they can be much tougher than luxury vinyl and can look fantastic or lots of companies now do click luxury vinyl which can be DIY fitted much easier than traditional stick down vinyl. Have a look at Quickstep Impressive laminate and Quickstep Livyn Click vinyl.

PazRaz10 · 29/10/2019 12:37

We have Quickstep Impressive Laminate all through the downstairs, and I love it. It's 100% waterproof and we have dropped all matter of things on it with no chips. It certainly doesn't feel cold under foot.
A couple of people have commented that they prefer it to their Amtico / Kardean - so worth taking a look for a comparison.
We had 80sqm to do and just couldn't justify the LVT costs.

Quick step is bloody awful and so is their customer service. We had a lovely dark grey put down in the bathroom.....rubbed what I thought was white paint off.... Turns out the grey rubs off with a damp cloth. I'm so mad about it. And they have refused to help despite me showing them a video of the grey coming off onto a pale cloth.
Whatever you choose, get a sample and test it out for durability!!

helpmum2003 · 29/10/2019 17:58

We've had the wood effect Karndean as well as non wood ones. It is very hard wearing.

I have friends whose laminate has lifted with damp cleaning. I can use a steam cleaner on Karndean.

I think with all of them the quality of the fitting and boarding underneath makes a huge difference.

smartiecake · 29/10/2019 17:59

We have had a different luxury vinyl tile in our hall and lounge. Looks like laminate but it is identical to Karndean and half the price. From a reputable floor firm and comes with extensive guarantee. We love it. LVT is much warmer than laminate and hard wearing. And mop-able. Look for Karndean style products without the name or attached price tag

Karndean is amazing, we had laminate originally, recently extended and done the whole downstairs in karndean, so easy to keep clean, spills are easily wiped up without distorting like laminate does!

MerryDeath · 29/10/2019 18:16

disappointed this isn't in baby names

Ohjustboreoff · 29/10/2019 18:46

We have Karndean in our family room and the DH loves it but I think it's crap! Looked lovely when put down 1 year ago but scratches very badly. Have DD 6 and DS 4 plus a puppy and the floor does get a beating. It's very scratched and when DS knocked over his scooter it put a divot in the flooring.

Northernlurker · 29/10/2019 20:57

Grinmerrydeath
