Tips on quick and easy paint techniques please

I want to do a quick paint job on a couple of bedrooms. The walls are sound enough but just not very smooth and level and I think a bit of texture rather than plain would look better. I've sanded and filled ofc but it's a very old house and I don't fancy replastering everywhere.
I've done sponging with a natural sponge before and that was easy enough, but is it a bit dated?
I've found a few techniques on you tube but I'd love to hear any first hand stuff from people who are not amazingly talented, more average have a go types like me.

Also, they mostly seem to use 'glaze' - I was hoping to just use up various colours of emulsion I've already got and couldn't find anything called glaze at the DIY shop. Do I really need glaze?
All info gratefully received, thanks.

Hum, i think sponging or rag rolling is a bit of a risk. i've seen nice effects using autentico paint to give a tadelakt kind of effect but i think it does need polishing, work a look though to see if you can recreate it using odds and ends you already have
