Help Moving to Manchester/Wigan

We currently live in Bicester, Oxfordshire but have wanted to move up North for years. House prices around here are ridiculously high 350-400k for a house in a decent neighbourhood so we know we can get a lot more for our money up north. My husband works from home (self employed) and is bread winner so we are open to all areas. What areas would people suggest that have good links to the south, good schools, close to train station, nice green areas for walks/parks. Not too fused about Crime rates as will have a security system etc but nowhere like Bradford where I assume we won’t fit in without sounding racist.
Many thanks people

Bromley Cross, semi rural, has great school ratings, direct train line to Manchester.
