Built in microwave owners come hither

Decided to replace our built in oven and I'm thinking of adding a built in microwave. I have questions!
Does the microwave sit directly over the oven leaving no gap or, if you look at my photo there is an infill piece, do I leave that in as a gap?

Obviously there will need to be a bit of rejigging and a new infill panel over the top.

Can you show me any similar set ups please?

To add, my microwave is already in that cupboard above the oven so I'm used to the height etc.

we have abuilt in oven with micro above it was here when we moved in and theres no gap between them, sorry cant do a pic as ive left my camera at work (use it there) mine is coming out as soon as i can do it as it takes up a huge space that i want for the fridge freezer and oven dosent work any way

SistersOfPercy · 22/10/2019 17:15

thanks @isseywith4vampirecats

I've googled the life out of it and it seems to be a firm spy between gap and no gap.
Current oven seems to have a mind of its own and although cooks fine 90% of the time has phases where it either cremates or undercooks. We inherited it with the house anyway so it can go.

I'm looking at Hotpoint at the moment, though being put off as their brand ambassador is now Jamie Oliver which is a rant for another thread.

i have a convection micro combination that i use daily as there are only two of us but went to use the big oven for something the other day and it blew the elctric board so theres no way its staying, our kitchen is lone and rectangular so i need the space for fridge freezer and getting a new free standing cooker

GladAllOver · 22/10/2019 17:27

The top of the oven will be getting hot.
A microwave oven contains electronics and may need insulation material or a ventilation space to protect it from the heat.
Check the handbook before you buy it.

SistersOfPercy · 22/10/2019 17:31

@GladAllOver the built in microwaves are designed to stack over the top of built in ovens. Every one I've seen so far just sits above the overn.

@isseywith4vampirecats I'd considered ripping out the hob and cupboards underneath for a range type cooker but then I'd be left with this huge, odd looking block of larder units.

I dream of a Neff Slide and Hide Grin but then sensible me realises it's just an oven with a gimmick.

we are going to be putting in a whole new kitchen so i can design round the cooker at the moment i have this odd corner with a gas fire in it thats getting squared off and cooker is going over there not getting a range sized one just a normal four burner

GladAllOver · 22/10/2019 17:47

If it's designed to fit directly over the oven as you say, why are you asking if you need to put in the spacer?
This is a matter you should be checking with the specification of the particular microwave you choose. It will say whether you need any spacing or protection.

LenoVintura · 22/10/2019 17:51

Here's mine, very new.

It's an aesthetic question.

thanks @LenoVintura looks fab without the spacer, what brand are they if you don't mind me asking?

They're AEG in a Howdens kitchen.

MerryDeath · 22/10/2019 19:03

@SistersOfPercy same re slide and hide. i proudly showed DP in kitchen showroom the other day all "ah this is the one", and he was like...... "why?" and.... i didn't have an answer for him ☹️

SistersOfPercy · 22/10/2019 20:59

@LenoVintura gorgeous! And out of my price range. Boo

@MerryDeath should have seen me with the Samsung that has a half opening door for the grill. I was like a kid at christmas! A useful feature I thought, but still not a £600 feature.

In the end swayed by the 10 year parts guarantee and features I went for a Hotpoint oven (TWAT) and a non branded built in microwave thats a pretty good match. Ultimately I only use it for zapping beans so probably not worth spending £250 on a matching one.

I shall decide whether to keep or lose the gap when I put them together. Though I'm the sad bugger thats spent the evening mocking it up in photoshop Blush

My microwave sits about 4 inches above my oven. There's a filler piece. They are from different manufacturers though.

foxatthewindow · 24/10/2019 17:05

I don’t think the Neff slide and hide really is a gimmick. We had one in our old house and I really loved it. Being a short person with short arms it was really convenient when getting heavy things in and out. They’re expensive though and I sometimes wonder if we should get AEG for our next kitchen

MarieG10 · 24/10/2019 22:27

Mine has a separate compartment above the oven. Looks continuous but it isn't as I saw it installed. Mine is a matching but separate microwave (AEG). The other poster with AEG looks like a combination over and microwave?

SistersOfPercy · 24/10/2019 22:50

I think I'm going to leave a slight gap, only because it will mean everything just slides in (hopefully). Thanks for your pictures Issey, looks great!
This will sound ridiculous but as a kid I had a sindy house and the oven was built in like that. I kind of aspired to the block of appliances.

I've been telling dh for a While that the oven had a mind if it's own, it's only when he tried to cook something and discovered it raw he finally admitted it.

Anyway often arrives Saturday, microwave Tuesday. Fingers d tossed there won't be too much cursing

mine looks good but its going because the cooker part is unusable put the oven on and it blew the electrics and my fridge freezer is going there when we get the new kitchen in, enjoy your new combo we are looking at replacing our crappy electric hob with a free standing gas oven i prefer gas
