Tap washer

Hi, I was hoping to change the tap washer in the Bristan(sp?) basin taps. I've got the little cap off the top and am ready to take the screw out. Only problem is the screw won't turn. It looks a bit rusted and the screwdriver won't fit in the grooves of the screw. Can anyone recommend anything to get this screw out?

Stanley knife or similar to scrape it the rust. Also make sure it's the right screwdriver. There are two common types of cross head screwdriver, Phillips and pozidrive, and you need to get the right one and the right size

If it is a Bristan tap the screw will be brass and not rusty. You are using the wrong screwdriver. Stop at once and buy a new set tomorrow. Feel a few screwheads and screwdrivers. When you have the correct one you will be able to feel a perfect fit.

It is most likely a Pozidriv. There tiny markings to help you verify. Phillips were used 50 years ago but are still popular in at least one backward nation.
