Kitchen worktops- budget options to replace

We are going to replace our kitchen in the next couple of years but in the meantime I am going to spruce it up.

The current worktop is scratched and worn so I wondered if anyone had replaced theirs on a budget with ideas like the overlay that some companies provide, or painting and sealing it etc?

What's your budget and what are you looking for, I cant believe how much kitchen fitters charge so I am in process of doing mine with help from my dad. I managed to find 40mm solid oak worktops, 6m for £244 oiled them myself the oil was around £30

You can fit wooden yourself as most companies will cut the joins but laminate is tricky as they have to make the join line match up in colour and make it waterproof.
