Gas and Electric Bills

kitty1976 · 25/09/2019 18:42

I was wondering if I’m paying too much for gas and electric. I pay by DD monthly £225 for gas and £210 for electric. We are on a fixed tariff and it seems to be fairly competitive when I have looked at switching etc. What do others pay?

Less than £100 for both in a 2 bed flat ... sounds high to me!

dementedpixie · 25/09/2019 18:46

That's expensive! I am in a 4 bed detached in scotland and my payment has just been reduced to £123 per month combined

hotchocdrinker · 25/09/2019 18:46

Blimey that’s high! How big/old is your house? I’m in a 3-bed townhouse (about 14 years old) and pay £96 per month combined gas and electric.

BusyDoingNothingx · 25/09/2019 18:46

Same we pay £60 for both in a two bed flat..

Span1elsRock · 25/09/2019 18:47

Depends on your house size, age of your heating system etc.

We pay £200 a month for our LPG, and around £150 for electric but it's a fairly generous 4 bed detached.

hsegfiugseskufh · 25/09/2019 18:48

We pay £90 for gas and electric combined. We are in a 3 bed semi.

coconuttelegraph · 25/09/2019 18:49

It doesn't matter what anyone else pays, you can't simply compare ££ per month, it's meaningless. Check a comparison site to make sure your unit prices are the cheapest you can get then cut your consumption to save more.

dementedpixie · 25/09/2019 18:49

Are you sure that you are paying both amounts?

rosamacrose · 25/09/2019 18:50

You need to look at the unit rate per kWh and the daily standing charge shown on you bill.
Compare that way.

coconuttelegraph · 25/09/2019 18:51

How much are your unit rates? Do you send in accurate readings? Is you account in credit or are you building up a debt?

You need to know all these things to judge if you could pay less

MiniMum97 · 25/09/2019 18:52

That's extortionate. I live in a 4 bed very draughty house and pay £125 a month for both. That's with two of us living here.

Ffsnosexallowed · 25/09/2019 18:52

That's huge,! 4 bed detached here and about £100 a month for both together. (Getting a new boiler halved or gas bill)

Cecilia2016 · 25/09/2019 18:54

I’m on fixed tariff as well and I have been paying £210 for both gas and electricity every month. We live in a large 4/5 bedroom detached house.

AuntieMarys · 25/09/2019 18:55

A month????
We pay £109 A month, 4 bed house, 3 bathrooms, 13 radiators.

Tbhf · 25/09/2019 18:57

The most we are charged a month is £70 that's for 3 bed semi-detached dorma house with rubbish insulation and a husband that doesn't like being cold (vest, t-shirt, jumper, dressing gown, and a blanket when it's cold in the evening) but no tumble dryer.

The only way you are going to know if you are over paying is to do a comparison site

Cecilia2016 · 25/09/2019 18:59

We have 13 radiators , 3 bathrooms and under floor heating in the bathrooms

doublebarrellednurse · 25/09/2019 19:03

It's impossible to compare when we have no idea what your usage is like Confused

No point comparing a 3 bed terrace with a 6 bed townhouse with a sauna and 8 people living there

dementedpixie · 25/09/2019 19:06

£435 is a huge amount. What size of house? Do you give regular readings?

PigletJohn · 25/09/2019 21:23

You are paying a very large amount

BUT

we cannot comment sensibly without knowing your actual usage, from meter readings (not estimates).

The £££ in the direct debits often have no particular relationship to usage in the current quarter, for example if meter readings have not been provided, or if there is a large accumulated balance being paid off.

Go and take your meter readings today. Then look up any old actual readings you have. Can you let us know Cubic Metres of Gas for a 12-month period? Or some other period? And kWh of Electricity.

Thank you.

It will then be interesting to know the size and age of your home, and of your swimming pool, if any.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 25/09/2019 21:43

I have the heating on from October to April and use the dryer most of the time. I pay 138 a month, Octopus energy, on a four bed semi. I am always in credit, and get a smallish lump sum back of around 200 every year.

Yours seems horrendous, 435 a month?...

kitty1976 · 25/09/2019 22:03

Hi, thank you for your responses, it’s a five bed and quite old. Electric meter is a smart meter and regular correct gas readings sent. Paying 4.1p for gas and 16.2p for elec per kWh

kitty1976 · 25/09/2019 22:06

It’s not some sort of mansion, I just don’t understand. It’s 3000 sqft. Seems completely out of line with others

OP posts:
kitty1976 · 25/09/2019 22:08

Yes £435 a month!!

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 25/09/2019 22:09

What are your timings for heating/hot water? Underfloor heating? Do you have a bill that gives your annual usage?

JumpyLiz · 25/09/2019 22:10

Are you really paying £435 a month for your energy?

That seems humongous. I know every situation is different, but we have an old, 4 bed, three floor terrace and an electric car and pay £180.
