Gas oven won't light

@pigletjohn can you help ? Rented house, Montpellier gas oven, when I turn the control and press the ignition it does light, but as soon as I let go it goes out. The grill will light and stay lit. Oven was professionally cleaned about three months ago due to previous tenant leaving it filthy, so it shouldn't be that causing the issue. Any ideas to why this is happening, the oven was replaced two years ago so not particularly old.

sounds like the flame failure device has failed. It might possibly be clogged with grime. Sometimes you can see a metal prong leaning into the flame. If it is accessible and visible you might try cleaning it with a toothbrush or something, but I think best to get a gas-safe person in who is qualified on gas cookers. They are not so common now. The actual replacement part might not be very expensive but it does need to be correctly fitted.

Cheers, the flame itself actually is at the bottom of the oven(not the back as most) and covered with a plate with a couple of holes in so it's tricky to see much. I'll get back in touch with the agents.

The gas engineer has been, the thermocouple needs replacing. Are they prone to failure after such a short time ?

It seems to vary. I know someone with Canon that has been trouble-free for many years, and someone else with an Italian model that has had several failures.
