Peterborough has some pretty bits. How much of a city has to be pretty to count here?

Fifthtimelucky · 21/09/2019 11:33

@RuffleCrow: Ely is a city, but not everywhere with a cathedral is a city. Guildford isn't. Nor is Blackburn. I imagine there are other examples of towns with newish cathedrals.

And we are what do we all mean by 'pretty'. I wouldn't call Edinburgh, Durham or Newcastle pretty. Nor would I say all Scotland was pretty. I think pretty implies a more gentle landscape and style of architecture.

York and Harrogate

@wowfudge
For your benefit I attach a photo of Liverpool's waterfront, objectively very beautiful never mind pretty.
I guess you've never been or maybe you're from Manchester? A city not mentioned on this thread for a reason.

Which bits of Peterborough, apart from the cathedral?

If I was recommending a pretty city to go to for a day trip I don’t think Peterborough would be high up on my list.

wowfudge · 21/09/2019 13:36

Just not what I would describe as pretty! I'm from Salford, which definitely isn't pretty. Lots of places are not pretty and many are and it's got nothing to do with where I'm from. It depends how you define pretty.

Beautiful is more than pretty. Striking does not necessarily mean beautiful, etc, etc.

Corneliawildthing · 21/09/2019 13:39

Bath, York and Oxford

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 21/09/2019 19:42

Those who are say that Edinburgh is 'handsome' rather than being pretty are obviously talking about the New Town area, which is definitely handsome.

The Auld Town is most definitely pretty.

The prettiest place I've ever been in the UK was Aviemore in Scotland. Stunning.

Atlasta · 21/09/2019 19:53

Durham

midsomermurderess · 21/09/2019 20:10

Even the old town of Edinburgh isn't necessarily pretty. For every cute pic of old town buildings you show, there are huge, rather glowering, tenements with their feet deep in the dark streets below. I think a defining quality of much of the central parts of the city is it's elegant austerity (informed also by its reformist past) often matched by its glowering skies (granted, not this weekend, it's been glorious).

MrsStarwars · 21/09/2019 20:21

Lincoln was very pretty today in the sunshine. Beautiful river walk, then wander uphill to the cathedral/castle in the Bailgate

MinnieMountain · 21/09/2019 21:18

The river. The Lido. Thorpe Hall.

I'm not saying it's the prettiest but the OP hasn't actually said why they want to know and they did post in Property rather than Travel.

GoFiguire · 21/09/2019 23:10

Fletton is right up there with Chichester. And the walk from Peterborough city centre to the Showcase cinema is particularly scenic.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 22/09/2019 07:04

Aviemore?! You are kidding and presumably mean the gorgeous and splendid surroundings, rather than the ugly little 70s thoroughfare?

gower4 · 22/09/2019 17:17

Another vote for Ipswich - beautiful

Corneliawildthing · 22/09/2019 17:21

I can't imagine anyone describing the actual town of Aviemore as beautiful. It's a horrible little concrete jungle with some big overrated hotels.
