We’ve been quoted a by the hour rate for removals. The others seem to judge how much you’ve got and give a fixed rate....wwyd?

Fixed rate. An hourly rate can be stretched by moving a bit more slowly, or forgetting things that have to be fetched. With a fixed rate you know in advance what you will pay.

Oh god - definitely fixed! Avoid hourly prices like the plague. I speak from experience of seeing two removal jobs (one mine, one my parents) be massively underestimated and take over twice the expected time. Had we been on hourly rates it would have been a really nasty shock.

Fixed. The packing and removal of my house went exactly as planned. Turned up with removals men at the new house and the vendors were still packing up doing it themselves. Estate agents refused to hand keys over until they had finished even though we had completed and the house was legally mine. Two hours later and some choice words we finally got in. You can control things your end but that doesn't mean the rest of the chain will work as smoothly
