Landlord referencing

Does an estate agency / referencing company contact your landlord directly for a reference?

Or do they contact the estate agency you are renting from if the property is managed by an estate agent?

Probably the agency

Always the agency in my experience, although on two occasions the agency asked the landlord if they had anything they wanted to add.
