East of Leeds - Selby or somewhere else

I've posted this query on AIBU and been asked to do it here instead...

We (me, DH, DS (14), DD (9) may be moving to Yorkshire in the next few months. DH's job will be to the east of Leeds. We have a budget of around £270-300,000 for a 4/5 bedroom house, which seems to be doable in the local area but... where in the local area? DH has put a pin in a map and suggested Selby. He doesn't want to live in Leeds (long story, but he doesn't love cities) and has found a few new developments around the town. I know nothing about Selby (we're currently in the Midlands). Please tell me about Selby! Anyone live there? Suitable for a teenager? For me? Please help

(PS, We want a town, not a village. Probably can't afford "naice" Mumsnet location like Harrogate, Ilkley, York)
Dh locating to East Garforth for work)

I saw your other thread and I second the suggestions for Howden. Great links to M62 for Leeds, good schools and there are some nice developments being built. Have a look at these properties in your price range

(Sorry if these are not clicky links)

Not Selby. Look at Garforth, or Tadcaster. Garforth has excellent links and the very edge of Leeds.

I think Selby often gets a bad rep simply by being compared to York, but I don't think it's all that bad. There's some comments about it being charity shops etc but high streets are suffering in general. Schools look decent, and you will get the house for your budget.

Garforth itself is decent, and despite being in Leeds, is really a separate town. It benefits from good rail links to getting into Leeds/York (Selby I think is one an hour, and will be more expensive to get into Leeds). But I doubt you'd get as much house for your money.

With a teenager, I’d be inclined to find somewhere with easy public transport to Leeds City Centre.

A couple of other suggestions which should be in your budget are Colton and Crossgates.
