Moving Soon, DIY In What Order?

Finally exchanged, and looking ahead to the work that needs doing in the new house. It's a 4-bed with zero storage space! I am stressing about everything that needs doing but don't know about order. Any suggestions? We need:

  • built-in wardrobes in bedrooms and bookshelves in living-room (most urgent)
  • new carpets in bedrooms (not as urgent, but will make me feel more at home)
  • walls painted (current walls are neutral so could wait)
  • new wooden floors for living-room (currently carpeted)
I'm confused about the order, eg shouldn't we decorate first so paint splashes aren't a worry? Or should shelves be built against old paint walls? Cupboards on old carpet?Just don't know what to focus on first, and we are on a tight budget so can't do all at once!

Does it need any major works like plumbing, electrics, roof repairs or damp course ? If so do those first then consider the decor.

Sort out new hard floor first (after any pipes/wires) as otherwise you will have to empty out all your furniture.

Any electrical/plumbing first, plaster, paint, wood floors, fitted cupboards/shelving, skirting, carpets. I would suggest doing the bedrooms first so you have time to consider the downstairs areas, never rush because you need to live with it for years

Do the painting before you do the carpets, and I would also say wardrobes first.
We are just replacing the doors on our wardrobes, but have painted all the rooms, the carpenter is then doing the wardrobes and then we are doing the carpets. Followed by replacing all the internal doors. Surprising how much painting a room makes it feel more like home!

Thank you for the tips! I think the electrics/plumbing is okay, nothing flagged up in survey (crosses fingers). Then consensus sounds like paint, cupboards, carpets... Makes sense, and allows for getting the feel of the place. Box cupboards for a while then Grin

We've (almost) finished doing this and if we did it again I'd probably do a room at a time.... as long as there's no major building work involved. Maybe start with painting the living room, flooring then bookshelves. At least then you'll have one room to hide in from the boxes!! You could put your bed up in the spare room if you have one while you complete the master etc?

I'd insulate and board out the loft first if it's not up to spec. Getting old insulation out can be horribly messy. But I'm careful with money and hate the idea of losing heat through the roof!
