House share next door

We bought our house this year, 3 bed semi. The house next door sold at the same sort of time. That also has an extension with a room and bathroom above the garage. The last few months there has been major building work going on. The garage has been turned into a room and the house is now a 5 bedroom house share (living room is now a bedroom too). I have two questions really; is this going to devalue my house? I wouldn’t have bought it if this was the case initially. And can a family home be changed like that? I’ve looked online and there’s no planning permission that’s been applied for.

Perhaps call the council for advice if it's causing a problem. Pretty sure HMO have to comply to regulations galore anyway. It could be though that the work was done under permitted development ?!

It might be under pd but there will normally be an application related to that even so. It would also need buildings regulations approval. How far back have you checked though, an application could have been processed several years ago even if work is recent. Did nothing come up on your searches?

When we had a consevatory the council wrote to neighbours to ask if they had any objections. They didn't, because it didn't affect them really in terms of views/privacy etc. Planning permission was granted.

Either way, I'd make some enquiries with the council.

I live in a student area. My house is more valuable as properties rarely come up for sale/
Normal rent there.
